Strawberry Fields preserve
Ellen
Saturday morning I went to the grand opening of a new nature preserve, privately owned but open to the public in association with the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy: Strawberry Fields Farm & Nature Preserve. Located at 240 Cranes Hollow Road in the Town of Amsterdam, it offers views of the Mohawk Valley, open fields, woods, and wetlands, and features over 200 plant species. I walked the southern portion of the perimeter trail with a group. Bird species included Field Sparrow, Eastern Towhee, Blue-winged Warbler, Ovenbird, Chestnut-sided and Yellow Warbler, Eastern Wood Pewee, Scarlet Tanager, Bobolink, Red-eyed Vireo, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and Pileated Woodpecker. I look forward to exploring the rest of the trail, and hope that other birders will check it out.
Please note that while the nature trail is open to the public from dawn to dusk, it is closed on 4th of July weekend. Also, visitors are asked to stay on designated trails and respect the privacy of the homeowners. More info is available at a kiosk near the parking area. Ellen West Charlton

Fransje and I met at 6 am at Five Rivers First thing I heard this morning after waking was a barred owl in my yard. We attempted to find the worm-eating warbler at Deer Mountain Trail with no success- both of us were hoping for a new lifer. We heard things, but couldn't find the bird and thus we didn't count anything. We ended up with 90 species, 88 positively identified Here are our highlights- Deer Mountain- Scarlet Tanager Black-throated Green warbler Ruby-throated hummingbird Magnolia Warbler Stanton Pond- Spotted Sandpiper Watched a bald eagle go fishing Five Rivers, before noon- Orchard Oriole- male Blackpoll warbler Alder flycatcher Swainson's Thrush Black Creek Marsh- Virginia Rail Brown Thrasher Green Heron Thacher Park Overlook- Cooper's Hawk Black-throated Blue warbler En Route highlights Northern Parula Indigo Bunting American Kestrel Cliff Swallow a pair of Red-tailed hawks Five Rivers evening- woodcock- at least 2 2 wood thrushes were singing together- made a nice little chorus and we finally heard a veery Unexpected Misses- downy woodpecker, wood duck, cedar waxwing, purple finch, common raven, northern mockingbird, least flycatcher Unexpected common bird- great-crested flycatcher: we heard them everywhere We also saw a strange bird at Five Rivers that we couldn't identify. Hopefully, we will figure it out. Is there someone who wants our full list? I couldn't put it all into ebird due to finding so many birds in transit. Jeanette Roundy

Re: Nighthawks
There were lots of large dragonflies along the Hudson River this evening. One of their favorites.

Loons on Saratoga Lake
Naomi Lloyd
If anyone is birding on the lake tomorrow -- This afternoon I saw a flock of 8 loons, 7 Common in breeding plumage and one looking different. Probably just in alternate plumage but it actually looked a bit bigger than the others, the bill was very pale and seemed a bit uptilted. If you have more powerful optics or they're not in the exact middle of the lake, it might be worth looking at them.
Also five White-winged Scoters flew by headed for the north end of the lake. Naomi Lloyd West Sand Lake

Tennessee Warbler at Lake Lauderdale
Scott Varney
Had an amazing day of Birding yesterday at Lake Lauderdale, thus, it warranted another visit. New this morning was a Tennessee Warbler about 100 yards from the parking lot. Vocalizations of so many birds was amazing at 8:45 am. Next to the cabin furthest on the left (as you are looking at the Lake), there is a little hidden trail that hosted some very vocal and observable Canada Warblers and Northern Waterthrush. They were completely unafraid of my presence. This location has been a real Mecca for Neotropical Spring migrants. The close views of the last 2 mentioned were absolutely stunning! I've included my ebird checklist for those interested in a visit. Get there before Memorial Day!

Century Run Tomorrow!
Larry & Penny Alden
This is a reminder that tomorrow is the HMBC’s 72nd Guy Bartlett Century Run, where teams of birders try to find as many species of birds as they can in a single day within the eleven county NYS Region 8. This is a great club tradition and it looks like the weather will be very cooperative.
Anyone taking part in this event is asked to please report your results to me at overlook@.... Also feel free to post your highlights to this group.
Please report the participants in your team (even if you were a team of one), hours afield, species identified, and a general idea where you went (e.g., if you restricted your search to a certain county or counties, “hot spots” you visited, etc.)
Please send me your results by May 28 so that I can compile them and get a timely article out in Feathers.
Good Birding!
Larry Alden

HMBC field trip-Schodack Island SP 5/21- clarification
Colleen and I, along with Bernie and Chris G., will be leading this Sunday's field trip, while Naomi convalesces. If you are attending the trip, be advised that you can meet the group at the park, or at the Big Lots plaza on Rt. 9/20 in E. Greenbush. We want to be at the park well before 8 a.m., when the contact station starts to collect fees. Do not be late, we will leave Big Lots at precisely 7:30 a.m. Stragglers can meet up at the park, but we will be on the trails before 8:00 a.m. Thanks for your consideration. If the group is big enough, we may split into two smaller parties. Lastly, please wish Naomi a speedy recovery!

Warblers still present at Carlsbad area of SPA Park
Susan
Birdered the parking lot and walked back past the landfill. Best birds were N PARULA heard from the parking lot and TENNESEE Warbler singing in a tree just past the rail fence at the end of the old landfill. An Indigo Bunting was nearby in a tree along the fence. Black-throated Green, Black-and-Whites, Ovenbirds and Redstarts were also singing. There may have been more variety, but I can't hear Cape May and Blackpoll. I finally got to see Scarlet Tanagers and enjoyed hearing Wood Thrushes and Veerys. Susan Beaudoin

Olive-sided Flycatcher at Lake Lauderdale
Scott Varney
Had a fantastic day of Birding yesterday afternoon (Thursday) with Carolina Wren, Canada Warbler, and Black-billed Cuckoo as highlights. Best showing of the day was an Olive-sided Flycatcher right along the left side of the main road about 1/3 mile in from the parking area. I even managed to get a couple decent photos from the front and side.
Happy Birding, Scott Varney Salem, NY

The advantage of sitting on our upstairs deck: just saw a Blackpoll Warbler high up in a tree. Probably a first for my yard.
