Five Rivers EEC- 4/27

The weather was fairly tranquil at Five Rivers EEC in Delmar this morning, although the wind strengthened after 9am. That drove many of the birds farther into wooded areas and down along the Vlomankill corridor. New arrivals for me included a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Gray Catbird, Ovenbird, and Black-throated Green Warbler. The pair of Killdeer that have nested on the 'green' roof of the Visitors Center in recent years have returned again and are well into the breeding process. Other migrants/possible breeders seen this morning included several Blue-headed Vireos and a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. Many understory plants are well into leaf-out, and willows and maples will soon follow. As always, boots are recommended if you plan to walk the many wet, muddy trails throughout the property. Note that as of this morning, the North Loop Trail was still closed due to flooding conditions.
