Lock 9 Smith Basin birding

Scott Varney

What a treat the birds provided today.  The canal water level was a bit low and afforded nice strips of mudflats. Five species of shorebird were encountered.

1.  Killdeer
2.  Semipalmated Plover
3.  Solitary Sandpiper
4.  Spotted Sandpiper
5.  Least Sandpiper

I think that's the earliest I've seen that many shorebirds in our area on any single trip.

A few Warblers, Baltimore Orioles, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Savannah Sparrows, White-throated Sparrows, Chipping Sparrows, Song Sparrows, and a multitude of one of my favorites, the White-crowned Sparrow.  I finished the day with a low-flying Osprey!

Be Happy,
