GB2376: Friday 9 December: London Song Festival at Hinde Street Methodist Church
Gordon
Message 2376:
FRIDAY 9 DECEMBER (evening): "BENJAMIN BRITTEN AND W H AUDEN": THE LONDON SONG FESTIVAL at HINDE STREET METHODIST CHURCH (tickets at the special price of £5 for "Gordon's friends" when booked and paid for online in advance)
Nigel Foster, Director of the London Song Festival (LSF - https://www.londonsongfestival.org ), has very kindly offered my group of friends tickets at £5 for the LSF's final concert of the season on Friday 9 December, starting at 7pm.
The Programme: This concert is part of the LSF’s “Friends and Lovers” series of concerts, and is entitled "Benjamin Britten and W H Auden". It explores Britten and Auden's relationship which flourished on a musical level, resulting in numerous songs, many of them written as direct responses to the emotional tensions both men experienced on a personal level. We will hear their story through Britten’s songs and his own words from his letters and diaries, from their meeting in 1935 when both were working for the GPO Film Unit in London, through their experiences of both Britain and America, to their falling out in the 1940s. The programme incorporates every available voice and piano song they wrote together, including the Cabaret Songs, and the song-cycle "On This Island". You can see further details at https://www.londonsongfestival.org/concerts-1 (scroll down to the correct date - this is concert no. 7 in the current season).
The Performers: The performers are soprano Charlotte Bowden (a Britten-Pears Young Artist and Glyndebourne Jerwood Young Artist), tenor Harry Grigg (winner of 2021 Maureen Lehane Vocal Awards), pianist (and festival director) Nigel Foster and speaker David Mildon ("Son" in the BAFTA-winning "Happy Birthday Grandad", leading roles at Hackney Empire, Meunier Chocolate Factory and Jermyn Street and Soho theatres) reading Britten’s commentaries and reflections on the songs and about his friendship with Auden.
Interval Refreshments: During the interval, tea, coffee and biscuits will be available, for which donations will be warmly welcomed.
Venue and Transport Details: The venue is Hinde Street Methodist Church, W1U 2QJ, and the entrance is in Hinde Street near the corner with Thayer Street. You can view a map by clicking on https://tinyurl.com/v27um962 . The nearest tube station is Bond Street (Jubilee, Central and Elizabeth Lines, Zone 1).
Reserving Your Seat: To book, please click on https://www.londonsongfestival.org/concerts-1 and select "Student" as your Ticket Option. (Please note that you will NOT be asked to show student ID.) Select the number of tickets you want, click on "Add to Cart", scroll to the top of the page to find your basket, and then click on this and make payment. Your name will then be added to the guest list, so you will not need to show your ticket on the door. Please note that this special price for my group is only for tickets purchased in advance, and that the price per ticket on the door is £20 (£15 concessions).
Meeting Me: I will not be helping at the ticket desk, but you will find me inside the church from around 6.45pm.
Printed Programmes: Please consider supporting the LSF (a registered charity) by purchasing a programme (cost: £3). The programme is very comprehensive and includes historical and background information about the songs being performed.
Summary of Timings: 6.30pm - doors open; 7pm - concert starts; 7.50pm (approx.) - interval starts; 8.10pm (approx.) - second part of concert starts; 8.50pm (approx.) - concert ends.
