GB2373: Saturday 12 November: The Lord Mayor's Show
Gordon
Message 2373:
SATURDAY 12 NOVEMBER: THE LORD MAYOR'S SHOW and PUB VISIT (free event with no booking required)
Meeting Details: Meet Gordon and Keith on Saturday 12 November, between 1pm and 1.10pm, at Blackfriars station (District and Circle Lines and National Rail, Zone 1) in the ticket hall of the underground station.
The Show: We will walk to Queen Victoria Street to see the Lord Mayor's Show return to Mansion House. It should start to pass us at about 1.20pm. This procession has many participants, floats and marching bands, and normally takes about 1 1/4 hours to pass any given point. It will take place irrespective of the weather. Due to the likelihood of heavy crowds on the outward journey (Mansion House to the Law Courts in the Strand, from about 11am to 12.45pm), I do not wish to make the outward journey a "Meet Gordon" event, but you may, if you wish, view this spectacular procession individually along Fleet Street. However, viewing the procession returning to Mansion House is likely to be less crowded. For general information about the show, go to http://www.lordmayorsshow.org and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_Mayor's_Show , and to read about its 807-year history, go to https://lordmayorsshow.london/history/origins . You can download a map for last year's show at https://lordmayorsshow.london/dl/visitors/2021_lordmayorshow_map.pdf (the map and timings will remain the same). Immediately after the procession has passed (probably around 2.40pm), we will regroup at our original meeting point at Blackfriars underground station.
The Pub: We will walk to the Sir John Oldcastle, 29 Farringdon Road, EC1M 3JF, for a drink. Inexpensive food will also be available. We should arrive at about 3pm. See https://tinyurl.com/38cbf7k for a map. This Wetherspoons pub is adjacent to Farringdon station (Elizabeth, Hammersmith & City, Circle and Metropolitan Lines and National Rail, Zone 1). Anyone not wishing to walk may take the train from Blackfriars to Farringdon and meet us in the pub. You are, of course, welcome to join me in the pub and not view the Lord Mayor's Show (or vice versa), and I hope to see lots of you there. Anyone arriving at the pub early, please try to keep a large table.
Summary of Timings: 1pm/1.10pm - Blackfriars tube ticket hall; after the procession has passed (probably around 2.40pm) - Blackfriars tube ticket hall; 3pm (approx.) - arrival at the Sir John Oldcastle pub.
Trivia: The procession is over 3 miles (roughly 5 km) long. However, the route itself is much shorter, so the head of the procession reaches the end of the route before the Lord Mayor even leaves Mansion House.
