GB2361: Sunday 24 July: Wanstead Park Walk

Gordon

Message 2361:

SUNDAY 24 JULY (afternoon): WALK IN WANSTEAD PARK AND EPPING FOREST (free event with no booking required)

Meeting and Transport Details:  Meet Michael Golding and Gordon on Sunday 24 July, between 1.30pm and 1.40pm, at Leytonstone tube station (Central Line, Zones 3 & 4) in the ticket hall. The Central Line is scheduled to run as usual. For details of weekend closures on other lines, visit https://tfl.gov.uk/status-updates/planned-works-calendar .

The Walk:  Michael Golding (a member of my group, so known to many of you) lives in the area and will be our guide on this walk. We will stop along the way so that Michael can give information about the area, its history and notable features. We will walk to Wanstead Park, pass Wanstead Flats, and visit a museum called The Temple ( https://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/things-to-do/green-spaces/epping-forest/where-to-go-in-epping-forest/the-temple ). This beautiful temple is in Wanstead Park. Wanstead Park ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wanstead_Park ) and Wanstead Flats are part of Epping Forest, and in a part of London you might not have visited. The walk will last about 2 hours, including the visit to the museum. Anyone not wishing to do the full walk can wait near the museum or the ice cream place and be collected on our way back. There is a lovely place to sit by a lake and perhaps have an ice cream whilst watching the bird life. Please note that if it has been raining a small part of the trail could be soggy, so you might want to consider wearing wellington boots or other appropriate footwear. Our group has done this walk three times before (in June 2013, October 2016 and July 2019).

Afterwards:  Those who wish can join Michael and me for a drink and/or something to eat in a Leytonstone pub. We will go to at O'Neills, 762 High Road, E11 3AW, between 5 and 10 minutes' walk from the station. This pub has plenty of outside seating. We anticipate arriving there between 4pm and 4.15pm. They have an inexpensive lunch menu (£6 including a non-alcoholic drink, or £7 including an alcoholic drink) until 5pm. You can see the menu by clicking on https://www.oneills.co.uk/national-search/london/leytonstone/lunch-menu , and a map showing the location of the pub at https://tinyurl.com/5xuykf4b . Anyone going to the pub, but not joining the walk, could consider parking at Tesco Superstore, Gainsborough Road, E11 1HT (click on http://tinyurl.com/n578eczw for a map) - maximum 3 hours' free parking.
