Standardizing people's names
Beverly Smallwood
I'm trying to come to terms with the problem of finding people when I'm not sure of the spelling of their names. I've looked at But this seems to use an attribute fact type and not a name. Thus, I'm assuming, the alternate name would not be searchable in the individual records list. I feel this most acutely with my Swedish people, but my own maiden name has been spelled 4 different ways in the last three generations over different descendants of my great-great grandfather, who also changed his name. Ideally I could add an extra name in the name box so it would be searchable, but also be able to suppress printing in narrative reports or charts as that could be tedious. Is this possible? What are other people doing? Example: Person, Persson, Pehrsson, Pärsson - all the same name Jon, Jön, Jons, Johan, Johannes, and others - often interchangeable Ole, Ola, Olaf, Oluf etc. You get the idea. Bev |

Bev If you look on the All tab in the property box it lists all the events for that person Right click on the persons name and the pop-up appears allowing you to add alternative names You can add any number and all are searchable Unless you customise reports, etc they will always pick up the first name listed Regards John Hanson FSG

I have always used the same method that John describes.

Bev, On the Property Box Main tab, next to the Name box there is a more (+)… button. That opens the Names & Titles dialogue where extra alternative Names can be entered, with Source Citations if required so you know where they were used. IMO that is easier than using the All tab and offers the ability to swap the Primary Name with any Alternative Name. The method I have described above is the first option mentioned in the KB article you referenced in the ‘What Name Where?’ section.
In the Records Window you can Filter by name and all those alternative Names are included in the search. Similarly, in Queries and Edit > Find all those Names can be searched.
In Diagrams, you can use Text Schemes to choose which Names to display and easily suppress all the alternative Names. In Reports, there are Options to suppress alternative Names if you wish.

Alternatively prompt 'view' on top of FH when the menu opens prompt 'other records list' then individuals Type the surname you are looking for this will give you the whole list of the same surnames and Christian names. Prompt the person you are searching and make the necessary alterations. My example shown below. Also prompt 'indivual records tab and this will put all the names in alphabetical order Victor On 14/12/2022 08:19, John Hanson wrote:

Thank you Mike and all. I am aware of how to add additional names but I think the way to go is to suppress printing of all added names other than primary, then put some attribute in about other names only when printing is desired. I will need to explore this further. On Wed, Dec 14, 2022 at 4:32 AM Mike Tate <post@...> wrote:
