Report Printing Problems

Alan Hourd

I generated an Outline Descendant report for part of my tree. It looks exactly as expected on screen. When I press the print button. however, the printer churns out 18 blank pages with no sign of any text at all. The same happens whichever printer I use (HP laser or Canon inkjet). I have tried resetting all options to defaults but that achieved nothing. Printing to PDF (Microsoft or NovaPDF10 or Foxit) all generate totally blank pages. I changed to saving the file first but the save to PDF option simply doesn't work,  Saving as an RTF file works as expected and the text appears in Word as expected and can be printed from there (with minor disruption to the index) . Saving as HTML also works normally. Printing from any other program (Word, Excel and various specialised programs) all work normally, no trouble. I also tried generating a Narrative Report and printing that also generated a set of blank pages.

I have tried every variation of settings and output that I can think of but the end result is always the same. Normally I would uninstall and re-install a program in this situation but that seems to be a tricky proposition with FH. .

I am working on a desktop PC with a fast processor, 24 GB RAM and plenty of HD/SSD space running Windows 10 64 bit. I haven't encountered any other problems with the set up. I had some suspicion that the latest Win 10 update (. 2021-03 Cum Update for Win 10 Version 21H1 for x64, KB5000802). I'm running FH v 7.0.2 and have been since early January. I do use the Project folder arrangement and method of working.  I also had the well known problem with generating enormous PDF files a while ago and I' was still waiting for some signs of a solution to that - but at least I could see the output then. Obviously, I now regret ever having upgraded to v7, particularly at the price involved.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Yes Alan, that is a well know problem with FH V7.0 that has been extensively discussed in the FHUG Forums.

“V7 PDF creation very slow, creating huge files” and others regarding blank pages and workarounds.

Calico Pie are aware but have no quick fix.

Thanks for the almost immediate response Mike!  At least I know I'm not alone or overlooking something simple. I had already run into the massive file problem a few weeks ago but at least it generated a file with text. The sudden failure to print text at all came after I had successfully used the Print function to generate small documents. That was over several weeks. The blank pages occurred suddenly within the last few days. I just tried uninstalling NovaPDF 10 completely and reinstalling The FH version 7.7. Everything went well. after a couple of reboots - but I still get blank pages!  As someone who did a fair bit of programming (Assembler, Basic, Delphi FoxPro etc) in his time I certainly didn't expect a quick fix but this has been going on for ages now.

There have been further blank report printing occurrences discussed in the FHUG Forum.

“FH v7.02 not printing” and others that lay the blame at a Windows Update.

I have found a way round the problem that seems to work for me, for now. I save the report as an RTF file in Word, then make sure all formatting symbols and field codes are hidden. Then Update the Index and save the document again as a PDF file. Long winded but it seems to work and gives me a file I can email to family abroad!  I'm still tempted to try uninstalling (temporally) the last Win 10 update to see if that really was the cause of some trouble but the sun is out and some odd jobs need attention outdoors.

Yes, saving as RTF and then as PDF is a workaround that FHUG members have suggested may work.
