Please. How to merge two families with same parents into one

Colin Hildreth

Hi everyone,

I need help solving this conundrum that is stopping me record the complete details of the family relationships of Richard and Elizabeth Hildreth.

Somehow the two children I have entered so far have ended up being detailed as being in separate families but with the same parents (same IDs)

I would like to be able to merge the two families into one before continuing further. There is no recorded information regarding the marriage c 1840. I have birth information for Elizabeth though in 1824. (Father was a fellow sergeant)

At this stage I have only entered the birth/baptism for Mary Jane Hildreth, source [141]. This source is part of both marriage details even though Mary Jane is listed as being just in one

Generally I like to only add information to the tree as I enter sourced records, thus I use brackets as placeholders until I get there.

A perceived work around will be to delete my information for Richard Ambler and delete also his mother. ... but I fear by doing that it may compromise her presence in the "other" relationship, so I do need direction please.

Any help gratefully received as I don't want to unknowingly have this happen again.

Colin

Open the Families tab of the Records Window and select the two identically named Family records you have shown in your screenshot.

Then use Edit > Merge/Compare Records… to combine the two Family records into one.

BTW: If there is no Families tab use View > Other Record Lists > Families

Also you can enable the Families tab via Tools > Preferences > Records Window > Record Type Display Options

Thank you Mike. Enabling the family records window made the process successful.

Very pleased, I now have the two children together with their parents and can now add further siblings and records.
