New User - How do I find the Explore Records screen?

Cheri Mello

Hi all,

I'm coming from TMG. I saw Family Historian at RootsTech and decided to purchase it. I'm not sure that was a wise decision (although it is human nature to avoid change).

I'm already frustrated. I can't find the "Picklist" that lists ALL the individuals in my database. I looked at the Tour on the Family Historian website. What I'm looking for is this screen. I can't figure out how to get there. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you, Cheri in California

Hello Cheri

It may be hard to see depending on your screen size but there is an icon below the magnifying glass icon on the lefthand side of the screen. Click on that and then you will see the screen you have  included in your email.

Another option is to select View>Other Record List>Individuals which will also get you to the same screen.

I too have moved from TMG and have found FH to be the best replacement.

Hi Cheri

When you open a project in Family Historian, it normally opens in the Focus Window. You will see a stripe on the left of the screen and an icon that looks a bit like a stack of coins (highlighted in yellow in the picture below). Click on this once and it will take you to the Records Window (which is what you want). Usually this will show the list of all individuals by default, but if not, just click on the tab "individuals" - at the top of the list of names.

Once you get more confident, you can set FH to open in the Records Window view, but that's probably for another time!

Hi Cheri
Welcome to Family Historian and this group, you’ve only  had FH for a few days, so do give it a chance.  But you have made a very good move by signing up to this group as you will find that there is a wealth of information here and some very knowledgeable individuals who will be very happy to help you on your journey.
I personally have been using FH for many years and won’t use anything else, the flexibility is brilliant and it caters for all abilities.

Regards
Julia

Have a look at the video below which is a presentation from another TMG migrant. I am sure it will help to see the customisations they applied and hear their commentary comparing how things are done.

Hi Cheri,
I too am a recent migrant from TMG to Family Historian, not yet fully comfortable with the latter. But then it took years to really "get" TMG! I just finally decided I had to make a change to a more accessible program for the sake of all my data and years of work if I have any hope of descendants using it.

I have immersed myself in learning Fh-- this group, the help files, YouTube, presentations on the Arlington Roots site rootsusers.org, and a newer group family historian new users zoom group. Fh is not TMG, but wow! It can do a lot and it's fast. Like TMG there are usually a number of ways to accomplish things.

I compare this software move to our recent  household move. You need to declutter at the old place and decide what you really need to take, you have to find new places to put everything at the new place, and for a while it will all be a big mess! But you'll get there. And it will be worth it ,

Hi Cheri - welcome to FH.  I switched from TMG via RootsMagic just last summer.  One thing not mentioned yet, I think, is the zoom group.  If you drop Derek Heritage a line at fhnugp22@... you will receive notices etc.  Even if you cannot attend the live zoom meetings (UK time), they are recorded and you can look at them at your convenience.  I've been learning by leaps and bounds from seeing how other people do things.

I'm in the U.S. (Wisconsin) and do templated sources, both lumped and split.  You can feel free to contact me for assistance as well.

Wow! Thanks all for the responses.

Boy, I feel silly. Yeah, I see the yellowish highlight on that can thing on the LEFT. I was laser focused on the icons and drop menu stuff across the top!

I did a direct import from .pjc to Family Historian. Not too bad. I'm a pretty neat data entry person, so I didn't have a giant mess (stuff like the occupation in the country field and weird stuff like that). I've notice some random commas though. I bought it via the virtual expo hall at RootsTech and only played with it a day. Then I got busy. I hope to find more time to fool around with it this week.

I too hear that Family Historian (FH, I guess?) is the best replacement for TMG. A couple of Aussie guys were going to do some remake for TMG users, but it's been years. I feel silly using an unsupported program. So when I saw it at RootsTech with a small discount, I decided to try it.

Thanks for all the links and comments to go to explore. Glad to know Derek's Zoom meetings are recorded. I'll have to figure out how to look at the past ones.

Thank you again! Cheri, California, USA

Hi, Cheri, welcome to the FH community!

Via the Drop-down menus, View > Records List > Individuals will bring you to the list of individuals shown in your screenshot.

If you haven't already, check out the FHUG forum and Knowledge base. https://fhug.org.uk/
