Modifying folder location for Media?

Terry Fitzgerald

I hope this question makes sense.  I am a new user of Family Historian 7, coming from Family Tree Maker.  I've managed to get my project created.  The file folder location for my media is pointing back to the FTM media location.  I've moved a COPY of the media in to the Family Historian location.  I also use Parallels for FH because I am a Mac user.

My folder location for media is showing as "\\Mac\Home\Documents\Family Tree Maker\0 0 Fitzgerald Fennell extended tree 19feb2023 Media\ (media name)".  I'd like to remove the "\\Mac\Home\Documents\Family Tree Maker\0 0 Fitzgerald Fennell extended tree 19feb2023 Media\" and replace with "Media\".  I've tried various search and replace functions both within the program and with plugins without success.  Manually updating seems to be working, i.e., the media is viewable when I remove the extraneous string.  Is there a way to do this systematically?  Perhaps modifying an existing plugin?  Any thoughts are appreciated.   I have about 4500 media items so the manual option is a big pain!  Thank you!

Hi Terry,

The problem is that FH insists on matching the media file path with the existing Mac folder.

One option is to temporarily delete the “0 0 Fitzgerald Fennell extended tree 19feb2023 Media” folder.

Then use the Tools > External File Links… command and its Auto Repair Links button.

That should find the media files in the FH Project internal Media folder.

Then you can restore the temporarily deleted folder.

One of the search and replace options should work but I found that they don’t like trailing \ in the find string.

Try the Search and Replace plugin with

Search: \\Mac\Home\Documents\Family Tree Maker\0 0 Fitzgerald Fennell extended tree 19feb2023 Media

Replace: Media

Terry,

Just MOVE your Media to the new folder you desire and use the auto repair links as Mike suggested. There is no need to create an additional COPY but you could COPY off to a USB drive if it gives you peace of mind.

The Auto Repair Links will do all the work for you and search any connected drives which will take a while, sadly the search location cannot be more specifically targeted at present.

All links will be updated providing you have not renamed any files thereby breaking the link, like FTM renaming can now be completed in program with FH.

I tried to cover all things Media in the video below which might help.

I have realised why the Search and Replace plugin does not like trailing \

It is because it defaults to Whole Words searching, so expects a non-alphanumeric character after the \ which of course is not true.

So select Part Words in the plugin dialogue and it will match any file path.

e.g.

Search: \\Mac\Home\Documents\Family Tree Maker\0 0 Fitzgerald Fennell extended tree 19feb2023 Media\

Replace: Media\

Thanks!  My mistake was the copy function.  I bravely moved the data from FTM to Family Historian and its all good!  I was not quite ready to cut my ties with FTM, so then I copied the files BACK to FTM and both systems are working, though my focus is now on FH.

Mike Tate, I did try the plug in as you suggested and it was still not finding what I needed, but I am good now.

Thank you both!  I'm loving FH so far.  Still struggling with the transition and finding how to do things, but getting around just fine.

Terry,

Good job, FH is a very powerful program so I doubt you will fully unleash the full potential on your own.

My last video was mostly the contribution of a TMG migrant and how he customized FH, it also aims to promote a Zoom User Group which would be worth considering.

The details are on the video but the web address is below, a lot of users new and old are learning new tricks on that group and there is a back catalogue of videos available.
