Help needed writing queries
Pauline Parnell
Good afternoon,
I've been aware for some time that I need to tidy up my sources and citations. I think the answer is a query or two, but I haven't got a clue about how to write one. Could someone help please? First I would like to identify all birth/bap./marriage/death/burial records which are missing a source. Secondly, I would like to identify all records (same types) for which the citation does not have an image. I have multiple citations to each source (not sure if that makes me a lumper or a splitter). Will this be an issue? Many thanks, Pauline |

Hi Pauline, Check the FHUG Knowledge Base ‘An Overview of Queries’ https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/an-overview-of-queries/
The ‘Downloads’ section has useful examples, especially the Fact Queries. https://fhug.org.uk/kb/downloads/ e.g. There already is the ‘Unsourced Facts’ query and some ‘Citation Details’ queries.

Thanks Mike. I hadn't realised there were ready made queries to download. The 'citation details' queries look like they'll do the job. For some reason there are two columns marked 'source' in the one I've opened - exactly the same results in each. Presumably I can delete the columns I don't want to see. The variation in the amount of detail I've put in is truly appalling. I suppose it's a reflection of the changes in my recording practice over nearly fifty years. I've got a bit more work to do than I'd bargained on! All the best, Pauline On Wed, 7 Dec 2022 at 16:16, Mike Tate <post@...> wrote:

Yes, those two identical Source columns signal the start of the Citation fields and the Source record fields respectively.
Rather than delete the Columns you don’t want just change their Type at the bottom from Normal to Hidden. Then they can be easily reinstated if you change your mind later.

Thanks Mike. I hadn’t actually got as far as scrolling to the bottom. To my way of thinking, it would be helpful if there was something at the top to tell you what the different columns refer to, but then again I’m not used to using queries or any other data in this way so it’s probably blindingly obvious to anyone who does. Best wishes, Pauline On Wed, 7 Dec 2022 at 19:55, Mike Tate <post@...> wrote:

Pauline, The column values are defined on the Columns tab of the Query. There, both the Heading and the Expression used to display the data are defined along with other characteristics such as Sort order. So they provide the formal definition of what each column displays and allows the Column Heading to be changed to be more meaningful if necessary. Also, the General tab should give a summary description of what the Query results provide.
Did you study the https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/an-overview-of-queries/ that I suggested and the associated FH Help pages?

Mike, I'm working my way through it and not understanding much 🙂 On Thu, 8 Dec 2022 at 10:12, Mike Tate <post@...> wrote:
