deleting projects

I have 2 copies of my project copied some years ago, showing in my project window, which I wish to delete; I get dire warnings when I press the delete key. Can I be assured that as they are copies only the copy will be deleted and not any files that are also in my current project although there are the same named for instance media files involved.

Michael,  it depends where the media files used in your main project (the one you want to keep) are stored on your computer.   If the media files are all stored within the Media folder of your main project there is no danger of losing them when the other projects are deleted.  Also, if they are anywhere else on your computer outside the copy projects you want to delete they will not be lost.   The danger would only arise if your main project is using some media files which are inside the projects you want to delete.

In your main project use Tools > External File Links and look at the file links.  If all the media files listed are within the  Project Data Folder > Media folder (possibly within sub-folders) they are safe.  If any are outside that folder but also outside the ‘copy’ projects folders they are safe.  If any of them are listed as being within one of the ‘copy’ projects you will need to move or copy those particular files, preferably into the Media folder of the main project, and use the Re-Map or Auto Repair Links button to adjust the file paths.

As always it helps us to know exactly what commands you were using so we don’t have to guess.

I assume you are using File > Project Window…, selecting the old Project then More Tasks… > Delete Project…

The reason for the dire warnings is that the files are irretrievably deleted. They do NOT go into the Recycle Bin.

Only files held within the Project folder structure are listed as candidates for deletion.

So if you have Media files outside the Project that are shared by Projects then they should be safe.

Anyway, as a precaution, make sure you have appropriate independent backups of all sensitive files.

You should already have such backups as protection against any form of PC or disk crash.

Have you seen the FHUG Knowledge Base advice regarding ‘Backup and Recovery’?
