copy and paste website links
Philip Haddock
I can no longer copy records from Ancestry with the website link and past them into notes for an individual. Can anyone suggest why?

Philip, To help us diagnose what is happening you need to provide more details. What has changed since it last worked for you? Have you updated FH to a later version? Are you talking about the plain text Note box or the FH V7 Rich Text Note window? Exactly what paste options are you choosing? Please explain exactly what is no longer working: Is nothing getting copied at all or what?
Obviously, you can see what you are doing and what is happening but we cannot.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for getting back to me.
I am using version 7.0.1 and installed the update some time ago. I have been able to copy records from the Ancestry UK website and then pasting them with website link option into the FH Rich Text Note Window ( the version with additional word processing functions
e.g. text colours, bullet points and insert table) for the relevant individual.
Now when I try pasting them neither the simple paste nor the option for website link work (i.e. nothing pastes) Only pasting as unformatted text works.
Kind regards,
Philip Haddock

Philip, Try various web sites for comparison, I am assuming you are referring to the web clip feature? Be aware a lot of web sites strive to block such direct copy actions, they just don't want you doing it. I know I can grab images from various sites but not the big archive sites. Jackson

Hi Philip, The latest version of FH is 7.0.11 so is 7.0.1 a typo?
When nothing pastes are you sure there is something in the clipboard? If nothing is pasted with even a simple text paste, then nothing was copied from Ancestry.
If you copy web links from elsewhere are they OK?

Yes it was a typo. I’ve got the most up to date version. There is something in the clipboard but only pasting as unformatted text works. I will try to copy paste on other sites and let you know. Thanks again Philip Haddock

OK, so what text is pasted? Can you paste it here so we can see the clipboard text? Is it a valid URL web link?

Hi Philip
If you are copying and pasting using the mouse and shortcut menus, does using keyboard commands make any difference ?
Thanks.

Hi Mike,
This is the record I am trying to past into FH as paste with website link. As I said yesterday I can only paste it as unformatted text, neither the simple paste nor the website link options work.
Kind regards,

Try this. Do a right click on your mouse which opens a menu. Prompt the screen shot. This will allow you to take a shot over the area you want to save. I do this all the time and add it to FH.

Hi Philip, I think I now understand better what you are attempting to do.
You are using the right-click options ‘Paste’ or ‘Paste with Website Link’ or ‘Paste Unformatted Text’. ( It would have helped if you had made it clearer you were using those right-click options. )
‘Paste’ works for me using the Edith Box details you posted here. If both tables are copied then the Edith Box table is pasted correctly. However, the Household Members table of rows & columns is not reproduced and each cell value is on a separate line. But if the two tables are copied and pasted separately then they are both reproduced correctly.
Perhaps, that issue of multiple tables with different numbers of columns in the clipboard should be reported to Calico Pie.
I have experimented with copy & paste of ‘tables’ on various web pages with mixed results. It seems to vary depending on how the HTML has been formatted.
‘Paste with Website Link’ works for me but with the provisos above. i.e. The URL of the original web page is inserted above the pasted text/table along with the words: Pasted From ….
Maybe, it is a specific problem with the way Ancestry have used HTML to format the tables.

I would certainly support that conclusion from memory. Some stuff pastes over neatly. Some is formatted chaotically, even though it looks similar on the original screen. I'm sure I can't paste (formatted) results from the GRO Index site but can paste similar formatted data from other sites. There are so many ways of formatting output that I find it difficult to understand how anyone can program a copy and paste consistently.
And of course, Ancestry, etc, can, and will, change their coding all the time.

When you are on a GRO index site just do a right click on your mouse it will come up with a menu. Chose screen shot then with your mouse cover the area you want to copy then save or download it I do this all the time Victor
