Changing fact tag plugin

Jorge Planas Campos

i. I've just downloaded the Change Fact Tag Plugin and wanted to use it to change Baptism-Standard Fact Set to Baptism-Spanish Fact Set (which I have just created changing the text in order to produce a Spanish report). All is well, the two Fact Sets are visible and I can choose Baptism in both. But the "Change Source Tag Name into Target Tag Name" button is not functional. What am I doing wrong? Is it that I can only change Tags WITHIN the same Fact Set?

Thank you.

Jorge

Have you created the Spanish Fact Set by cloning/copying the Standard Fact Set?

In that case, the Baptism tag is the same in both Fact Sets and so does NOT need changing.

What you must do is use Tools > Fact Types then click Fact Sets… select the Spanish Fact Set and Move Up above Standard Fact Set.

Then the Spanish facts will <eclipse> the Standard facts and use the Spanish Sentence Templates.

I assume you are following the advice in the FHUG Knowledge Base for Narrative Report Fact Sentence Templates:

https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:narrative_report_fact_sentence_templates

where under Default Fact Definitions there is a Tip on exactly this topic.

Warning: Many other users have tried to use Fact Sets like that to change language and failed.

Thank you Mike, that’s exactluy what I did: clone and rewrite sentences and put the new Tag List on top. The funny thing is that sometimes individuals’ Baptism tags come out with the Standard sentences (that is in thid place after Spanish and Custom) and sometimes (why?) in the Spanish sentences from the Spanish Tag List. I’m thinking of calling the main tags (Baptism, Marriage, Death, Will, etc.) with their Spanish names in the Spanish list and then use the Change Tag Plugin. Would that work? All of one of the projects should be in Spanish, so no problem in changing all of the tags.

Mike, just to give you an example of the problem, these are two individuals with a different text for “marriage”:

If some Baptism facts are using English sentences and some are using Spanish sentences at the same time, then there are two explanations:

1) The English sentences are Specific Fact Sentences local to that fact as explained in Narrative Report Fact Sentence Templates:

https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:narrative_report_fact_sentence_templates

What is the background colour of the Sentence box? That tells you whether it is Default (beige) or Specific (white).

2) The English sentences are because the Baptism fact is not using the standard GEDCOM tag BAPM but is a custom fact.

Use Tools > Fact Types and tick Show Hidden then scroll down to show the Baptism facts.

The Spanish Fact Set should be listed first with ticks for Visible and Status.

The Standard Fact Set should be listed as <eclipsed> and <disabled>.

Is one listed with Fact Set <none> and Visible <undefined> or some other status?

That is very different from the Baptism case.

Maybe you have forgotten to change the Marriage Witness Roles (for Bride) to translate their Witness Sentence Templates as shown in:

Perhaps you are right with the wrong GEDCOM tag. Should I open another topic for this “new” problem? In any case, among the roles in the Marriage tag I can only find a sentence for Witness, but it is not related to the Bride, and does not match with the “she was a Bride at” that appears in the report. I have changed quite a few Sentence Templates by now, but this one stumps me.

Thanks for your help.

What do you mean by wrong GEDCOM tag? What is listed in Tools > Fact Types?

I cannot help you if you don’t give me the full details.

May be there was a custom Baptism fact defined as well as the standard Baptism fact in the product you migrated from to FH.

You can fix that in the other product and import again, or use Change Any Fact Tag to convert <Custom Facts> Baptism to Standard/Spanish Baptism.

BTW: Changing the Label of a Fact does not change its tag, which is derived from the Name that you cannot change.

Check the Marriage event for Maria and Antonio, right-click and choose Witnesses.

Is Maria listed with the Role of Bride?

Presumably, that was imported into FH from another product?

In Tools > Fact Types in the Marriage event you must add the Witness Role for Bride and complete its definition.

What you are seeing in the Report is the default English sentence when there is no definition.

That was it: right clicking the marriage fact and there was the lady as witness (bride)! Deleted that and all was well.

Thanks for your help. And I still love the program, it is only the learning curve that is taking me some time, sorry.

Best,
