Adoption Parents

Brian Horridge

Hi all

I've got some children born to a wife's first marriage but who have now been formally adopted by her 2nd husband.    So these step-children will be shown on a tree alongside their step-siblings (as it's the 2nd husband's family I am more interested in), I have linked the children of the first husband to the new couple as well as their biological family (and marked them as Adopted under the 2nd Husband list of children). In the All tab of the children's Property Boxes both Parents family are listed but there is a Relationship sub-field in the 2nd husband's family saying "Adopted".

I'm perfectly happy with all this but I also want to use the "Adopted" Fact for the children so I can record the date of adoption.  However, this Fact also includes a sub-field where you can insert a link to a Family Record.  My question is which Family I should use - should this be the biological family or adoptive family (as I said - both are already given in the All tab).

I'm tending towards the adoptive (2nd) family but I'd like to hear other's thoughts and advice on best-practice.

Many thanks

Brian

Brian,

The GEDCOM 5.5.1 specification makes it very clear that it is the Adopting Family that gets attached to the ADOPtion event.

See INDIVIDUAL_EVENT_STRUCTURE on Page 34 and ADOPTED_BY_WHICH_PARENT on Page 42.

That is reflected in the FH ‘All’ tab for adding the ‘Parents family’ and ‘By Which Parent’.

However, you need to experiment with how ISR and other Reports include that information.

If the ‘By Which Parent’ subfield is omitted then the Adopting Family get included in Reports.

But if it is added then the family is omitted and the Report just says (adopted by ) which seems to be a bug.

BTW: The ‘Relationship’ sub-field options you mentioned in your first paragraph allow just the 2nd husband to be nominated as the Adopting parent.

However, that is a local convention supported just by FH and is not part of the GEDCOM specification.

Mike

Thanks for clarifying that.

I think I'll use the Adopted fact with only the Date to just record when the adoption happened.  If necessary I can use a local note if further info needs recording

Again, many thanks for all your help.

Brian
