How to define in which directory the auto-repair links should find the media to link with

Thank you,

I will try this

I did not actually give any advice but just asked some questions.

Here is my advice:

After creating the GEDCOM file from TNG what are the File Link paths for the Media?

i.e. Just open the GEDCOM file in FH and use Tools > External File Links… and review the File Links pane.

Make sure all (>250 ) TNG media files are in the matching File Links paths folder structure.

Also, the GEDCOM file should be placed in the same parent folder as all the Media files.

Then when you create the Project, FH does not have to search for the Media files because all the File Links are correct and you have the option of asking FH to copy the files into the Project if you wish.

If any of that advice is not clear then please ask don’t guess.

Hello Mike,

Thank you for your advice,

I built my genealogy on TNG on my website. All my media are saved there, in different files (documents, photos, signatures, etc) as well as the thumbnails of these mediafiles, that bear the same names. (in separate directories: ... /thumb/...)
I uploaded the media files  over the last 20 years from different files and directories on my PC.

Because TNG does not handle witnesses I decided to switch to Family Historian + Gedsite.

So I downloaded a Gedcom file with my TNG data, and I copied all (>250 ) the TNG media files and directories on my H:/ ...directory

If i follow your advice, I should

- copy the media files and directories from TNG in the Media subfolder of the Project?

- delete all the existing media links that were reconstructed by FH

- hope that FH reconnects to the media files in the Media subfolder of the Project (but will it ?)

Regards,

Vyger

I believe this has been wished for as it takes a long time over 7+ drives on my system.

My understanding from CP is I starts searching around the project folder and radiates out but I can only imagine this to be drive by drive.

I keep my media files outside the project folder as I have them linked to other software including Lightroom so an option to localise the search scope to a root directory would be welcome imo.

I use the auto-repait links function to find the +/- 250 media files after a gedcom import. They are located in my directory H:\document. However I have files in the C:\ directory with identical names in different directories. Witrh identical names, but with lower definitions or other contents. (e.g. . thumbnails). I don't want to link to these files, but the function will link the media to these files.

is there a way to force the autto-repair link to search only in the directory I want (namely H:\document)  ?

Thank you for your advice.

Olivier,

Perhaps we need to take a step back and investigate why you need to use Auto Repair Links at all.

When a GEDCOM is imported to create a new Project it tries to set the Media file links correctly.

So the crucial question is why are the Media links in the GEDCOM not referring to the H:\Document\ files.

Have you produced the GEDCOM and Media files from some other genealogy product?

Has somebody else sent you the GEDCOM and Media files?

Also, do you need to keep the Media files in the H:\Document\ folder or would you prefer them to be inside the Project in its Media subfolder?

It may be that with a slightly different approach to importing the GEDCOM file, the Media file links won’t get broken to start with.

Assuming your project only includes the imported Gedcom, and you want to leave the media in the H: directory, you can remap the file links and not use autorepair.

olivier.marquet@...

As far as I understand, the remap does  not influence the location of the auto-repair search, and is thus of no help.

colevalleygirl@colevalleygirl.co.uk

Have a look at the Remap facility, if you don't need to move the media into the project directory.

(from the Help file)

This button allows you to re-map any link to a file onto the file's actual location (if the file is not where it is supposed to be). But more than that it allows you to select any target folder (folder which is included as part of the targeting for any number of links) and re-map this folder onto the correct location. For example, if you 're-map' the folder 'Pictures' from within folder 'C:\Media' to within folder 'C:\Family Historian\Media', then all file links which previously had stored file names that began 'C:\Media\Pictures\…' will now store file names that begin 'C:\Family Historian\Media\Pictures\…'.

Re-map works with multiple selection. See Tips below for more on multiple selection. It also allows you to map links to locations outside the current Project Data Folder, to inside it, and vice versa.

For what its worth - I put mine in the recycle bin then restored them after it had finished.
