Splitting trees

Mike Tate

Victor, thank you for the clarification.

It seems everyone in your Project are related either directly or indirectly, so are all in one relationship Pool.

However, this thread is discussing splitting trees apart into completely unrelated sub-trees with different Pool numbers, which is something rather different.

The question is: should such unrelated sub-trees be retained in one Project or split into separate Projects?

To clarify things a bit

I simply have one project and all names are in that project whether they are directly related to me or not

Those names that are directly related I regard as my main tree. Those names that are4 not directly related but are related to some of the names on my main tree I think of them as branches of the main tree

Those not directly related have the link shown on the tab under 'tool' and 'how related' an example is

Hope this explains how I deal with unrelated names

Victor

I don't bother with separate trees. All ther names I have are in one tree.

There are relations I am not directly linked but, say, my nephew is directly linked to his mother's ancestors. I have these all on my tree and it doesn't affect the work I am doing. I can check any of my nephews ancestors by looking at the 'tools' tab and prompting 'how related' That way I can my nephew (and others) their relationship.

This suits me fine. I have over 80000 names on my tree and if I do a narative report only those directly linked are shown. I also know of any indirect connections

Peter, that may not work if some of those ancestors have descendants.

So an All Relatives Diagram is better but still does not guarantee that all relatives are displayed.

It is best to run the Query > Relatives and Relationships > Search For Orphans that lists by Pool number.

Select everyone in the appropriate Pool and use cog Menu > Add Row Records to Named List.

Further to this, the easiest way to add the sub-tree individuals to a named list is to create an ancestor chart from the sub-tree root and then select all in the chart by dragging a box round everyone.

(Start in a space top left and drag down to bottom right. You can ask FH to display the chart on one screen, if necessary. If you miss one, it can be selected while holding CTRL.)

Hi Linda,

As a general rule, we don’t recommend putting trees into separate Projects.

Just unlink that particular individual from their incorrect parent ancestor and keep the sub-tree in your main Project.

i.e. In the Focus Window with the incorrect parent ancestors in focus, right-click their Child Individual and choose Unlink Record.

Having done that, if you do want a separate Project, then put all the unlinked sub-tree Individuals into a Named List.

Then use File > Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File and Select… the Individuals via the Named Lists tab.

You can use the exported GEDCOM file to create a new Project.

Back in the main Project, use File > Split Tree Helper and delete all Individuals found by the Name List Members query.

Hello,

DNA has proven one of my lines to be incorrect and I would like to remove this section of my tree to a separate project.

Is it possible to remove all ancestors of a particular individual, or is there another way to do this?

Thanks for any help.

Best regards,
Linda
