Surname change/evolve
I’m not sure if this is possible but.. so I have a Thomas Edinborough baptised and married in parish records with that spelling of his surname but come to the 1841 & 1851 censuses the spelling has changed to Embra the same as the spelling for his entry on the GRO death index. FH won’t change the spelling of the surname after using a “a change of name “ fact ? Similarly after a marriage the brides maiden won’t change to her new married in subsequent events or will it?
With my One Name study of Scantlebury I have cases of where the spelling of Scantlebury is changed if the person is involved in an event in Looe or Morval in Cornwall to Skentelbery and changes again when moving out of those parishes but I think that is a simpler problem.
I thought I could use the “all” to manipulate the events with different names but unfortunately can’t remember how
Any thoughts or are my expectations to high?
Best wishes and Kind regards

Is what you are forgetting the entering of alternate names via the dialogue opened from the more link on the main tab of the individuals properties?

Thanks for playing the Devil’s advocate Adrian tis was appreciated & thanks, as it give me food for thought .
As I tend to use the data from FH to John Cardinal’s Gedsite I thought it would be best to look at the out come from another FH project .
I don’t use narratives on my websites but the only time the full name is given is basically as a header and then only the given name and/or pronouns are used (he, she him her etc).
So what I have aren’t necessary surname changes but variables in the spelling so probably a custom fact of “Surname spelling “ is probably to way to proceed and the use of the fact “married name” could be appropriate especially with a woman having multiple marriages.
Best wishes and Kind regards

I'm not totally sure what you're hoping to see and where. But...
The Change of Name facts are (IIRC) custom facts and don't, by themselves, do anything more than record when the name changes. Sort of. I think that the new name is documented as an attribute but, unless I'm very much mistaken, the Change of Name facts do NOT add the new name as an Alternate Name. You have to do that manually as an additional step.
See https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/how-to-handle-people-with-multiple-names/ and in particular note the instruction "Add a new Alternate Name to the person concerned with a Source Citation for the evidence of the name change" (plus variants).
But even when you have that Alternate Name, it's **not** picked up in any automatic manner in the person's property box (say) - there's no date to enable that logic, for one thing (because the Change of Name fact is purely documentary and not connected to the Alternate name.)
So for instance, my 5G Grandmother, Margaret Hughes married 1st Charles Gandy and 2ndly my 5GGF Samuel Pickstock. On Samuel's Fact Tab it says "Married to Margaret Hughes", even though she was Margaret Gandy at the time of her marriage to Samuel. Of course, "Best Practice" says "Use the birth name" - but I wonder if that advice was produced when software engineers found it too difficult to pick up the current name....?
So basically, you see only the Primary name in FH reports, windows, etc., because the necessary name change information simply isn't there in any meaningful manner (as I said, the Change of Name facts are custom facts so can't be relied on to be there).
There is a plug-in "Adjust AKA Names for Reports" (see https://pluginstore.family-historian.co.uk/page/plugin/adjust-aka-names-for-reports) but so far as I know, that temporarily adds various things to the Primary Name, to create portmanteau names for production of reports. The result should be reverted after the reports have been produced.
Having said all that, narrative reports (if you use them) tend to use just the given name so it may be less of a problem, while you can also make things clearer by explaining in the Notes, e.g. "Recorded as Embra".
