Installing Family Historian 7 and Charting Companion 8 on Laptop(s)
Just a couple of questions:
1) How many laptops can I install Family Historian 7 and Charting Companion 8 on, and can I use them at the same time?
2) If I have Family Historian 7 and Charting Companion 8 installed on my laptop and the laptop dies, can I install Family Historian 7 and Charting Companion 8 on a new laptop with the same activation key?
Please let me know.
Thank you and kind regards
Dee
Family Historian 7 now contacts a license server and can be installed/used on 2 devices (laptop or PC).
If you had a failed device, when you installed to another device, you are invited to deactivate one of the 2 you have installed.
Best Wishes
Neil.

Hi Dee,
It all depends on your software licence terms & conditions.
See https://www.family-historian.co.uk/licence-agreements for FH V7.
That says:
“You may not install or activate the Software on more than one device at any given time, unless you have purchased a licence which explicitly specifies a maximum number of allowed simultaneous installations, in which case you may not install, activate or run the Software, at any given time, on more than that specified number of devices. Unless your licence explicitly specifies otherwise, it is for personal use only, which means that an additional condition for installing or activating the Software on more than one device (if permitted at all) is that all such devices must be owned, kept and used by you, and no more than one person may use the Software at any one time.”
Also, check the wording of the Email you were sent with your FH V7 Activation code.
Usually, it says:
“Permits up to two simultaneous device installations for personal use.
Subject to the terms of the End User Licence Agreement which is displayed when you install the software.”
1) So you can probably install FH V7 on two devices but can only use it on one device at a time.
2) You will probably have to contact Calico Pie to deactivate the licence from the dead laptop.
I’m not sure about the Charting Companion 8 licence restrictions.
You will have to inspect your purchased licence or contact their help & support line.

I've recently been through this, having moved one of my two FH7 installations onto a different OS partition on my PC.
The first time I opened the newly installed copy of FH, it displayed a box showing my two currently activated copies, and asked me to select which of them I wanted to deactivate. Calico Pie's server then transferred the licence to the newly installed and opened copy.
I understand that you would only need to contact CP if you tried to reinstall FH on the same PC (or OS partition) that a licenced copy had previously been installed on, and where that previous copy had also been deactivated.

I concur with this. It's the same for a dead device or a replacement. On installation of effectively the 3rd device due to failure or replacement FH asks you to select one of the 2 'active' devices to remove.
Best Wishes
