Back up restore plug in before migration

liz_graydon

I am using version 6 which hs been updated to the latest update.

I am really not very confident about following the procedures for the back up and restore plug in prior to migration.

Do I presume that I don't need to tick any of the boxes on the restore and options tab?

I left them blank and when I started to run it I got a message box telling me Backup data exists 04/02/2020.  Warning Backup folder already has Family Historian backup data saved.  Is it acceptable to update this old backup data with new backup data? In fact my latest back up was the last day of August.  I haven't used FH since then for health reasons.

What do I do please?

I have read all the knowledge base pages for this procedure and all the other pages mention in there but I just can't take it all in and understand it.

Hi Liz,

To perform a Backup you do not need to alter the Options tab unless you wish to change the Backup Folder.

The Restore tab is used to restore your settings in the migration destination PC.

The message suggests you used the Plugin to Backup custom settings on 04/02/2020.

Yes, it is OK to overwrite those with this new Backup.

When you say your latest backup was the last day of August, do you mean you used this Plugin then, or you used the FH Project Backup then?

The FH Project Backup is completely separate from the Plugin Backup of custom settings.

I guess you are referring to the FHUG Knowledge Base ‘Family Historian Copy and Migration Guide’:

https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/family-historian-copy-and-migration-guide/

Can you be more specific about what you do not understand.

Thanks for the quick reply, Mike.

Thanks for the clarification about the backup, I will overwrite the old one..  Yes the August backup I mentioned was just the ordinary backup from with FH.  My backup routine includes doing an FH backup every two weeks so would you advise that I run the plug in at the same time so it is more up to date in case of problems?

Yes, I had read the Knowledge Base you highlighted in your link.  It is just so confusing to be sent here there and everywhere with all the hyperlinked pages and then have to return to where you were on the original page.  A lot of work has gone into that page and many others which I fully appreciate and thank people for their time in writing it.

I have a new laptop that I have yet to put FH6 on (I have my registration code) which will presumably have its own registry settings so when I downloaded and run the Backup and Restore plugin will it make changes to the registry and not overwrite it all because that presumably will cause problems as the registry for each laptop would be individual to each laptop?

Maybe I am making a mountain out of a molehill as so many people have told me it is simple but I just found the quantity of information in the documentation too much to take in when I had just been expecting to run the plug in, copy the FH folder over to the new laptop, install the plug in and then restore via the plug in.

You only need to run the Plugin if you have changed your custom settings for Diagrams, Reports, Queries, Fact Sets, etc…

But there is no harm in running the Plugin Backup every time you run the FH Project Backup.

Regarding hyperlinked pages, right-click the blue link and choose Open Link in New Tab.

Then the original page and your position in it are preserved in the original tab.

Alternatively, use the Back option in your browser to return from a new page back to the original page.

The Plugin Restore option only updates FH custom settings some of which are in the Windows Registry.

So it is only those Windows Registry settings that are affected, and FH itself updates them every time you use it, so the Plugin is no different.

Anyway, if you are at all concerned, the Plugin Options tab allows Restore Registry Data to be inhabited.

I am disappointed you would think a published Plugin would affect the whole Windows Registry.

Your last paragraph summarises the process perfectly. In essence, it is as simple as that if you have a conventional configuration.

However, there are special cases regarding Media files, Icon files, etc, that need explaining.

If any of those files are scattered across your PC then they need special handling.

After you have migrated to the new PC, do you intend to run FH on both PC from time to time, or will the old PC be disposed of?

Sorry if I didn't make it clear, I didn't meen to cause offence.  Please put it down to my ignorance.  I meant that surely the registry on my old laptop would be different to the registry on my new one?  I have never been one to dabble in the registry and don't understand its set up at all. I didn't realise that each programme would have its own litle area in the registry and the plug in is linked to that, so thank you for explaining.   I am competent to do a registry backup with Ccleaner because it advises that I do so but that is all.  Anything else is done by my son remotely as he works in IT in America so I wouldn't know what the registry contains.

Navigating hyperlinks and in separate tabs is fine, I was meaning that it took you away from what you were reading and then you had to get your mind back to where it was to carry on reading.

I run FH as straight out the box other than having downloaded some plugins, made some changes to settings and customisation of reports.  I don't include any of my media or have any icons (unless they came with the dowloaded programme).  I have been using Ancestral soiurces with it and realise I have to do a similar procedure with that.

I will only have FH on my new laptop as my old one is Win 8.1 and soon support will cease for it.  It is also old, slow and could do with a wipe clean and reinstall, take off the network and probably be a place I could back up files but only once I am happy everything is working on the new laptop.  When I am happy I will then be able to add Dropbox to me new laptop and delete the link from the old laptop to Dropx in the process.  I don't store my FH database in Dropbox but all my genealogy files are on there.

Again, sorry if my ignorance has caused offence in any way.

Yes, you need to migrate AS too and I guess you found the FHUG Knowledge Base page for that?

You say you don't include any of your media but I’m not sure what that means.

Are you saying you have not linked any Media files into your FH Project?

If so, then migrating is as simple as you suggested.

liz_graydon

Exactly that Mike, my digital media are not linked but in separate storage where I can look them up when needed.

Yes i did see the need to migrate AS too but haven't actually read the pages yet.
