Citation Duplicate

Richard Whitchurch-Bennett

In error I have added two citations types with the same name and have used them both against facts for different individuals in my FH project (Version 7.0.15).  I have tried to merge these citations, but cannot seem to do so.  Can someone advise if this is possible.  Thanks. Richard.

Richard, I think you are probably talking about Source records, not citations.  Citations cannot be merged, although multiple records can have identical citations to the same Source.  Source records can be merged in the same way as any other records, (for example Repository records were mentioned in another recent topic).  Select the two records in the Sources tab of the Records window and then use Edit > Merge/Compare records.  They will now be pre-selected in the right hand side of the next window.  Click OK.  You will now see the Merge Records window.    Is this what you have tried?   If so, what problem did you have?

If you are talking about Source templates (as distinct from Source records which are created from those templates) I’ll leave it to someone who is an expert on templates to answer the question.

Thanks Lorna.  It is the Source templates that I am trying to merge.  I have tried to use the normal merge process, but I am unable to click on the two sources at the same time that would enable me to edit them and merge.

Lorna Craig

Can you confirm that you are looking at the Source Templates tab of the Records window?    I have just tried selecting two templates in that window without a problem.   (Select one, hold down the Ctrl key and select the other).

Yes I am looking (I think and hope -see attached) the Source Records template, but I am not able to click on both entries that I would like to merge using Ctrl key as I normally would when merging.
Very strange if it allows you to do so.

Unfortunately there was no attachment with your post.  Can you try again? (Posts with attachments have to be moderated so there will be a delay before it arrives).

OK, those are Source records, not Source templates.  They are all generic sources, so no templates are involved.

You are looking at the Select Source window, which opens when you want to add an existing source to a fact, and you can only select one source at a time in that window.

You need to go to the Records window. (In the vertical bar at the extreme left of the screen click the icon which looks like a stack of disks.  If it’s not there, use Tools > Preferences > Display  and tick Always Show Records Window Icon in Navigation Bar.)   Then in the Records window click the Sources tab.  You will now be able to select more than one source.

Richard,

That screenshot is of the Source Record Selection dialogue for adding Source Citations, so merging is not allowed there.

Open the Records Window that has tabs for Individuals, Families, Notes, Sources, etc…

Open the Sources tab and select your two Source records there by using the Ctrl key technique.

Then you can use File > Merge/Compare Record…

BTW: You are merging ‘Source’ records and not ‘Source Template’ records, which are something different.

Correction: That should be Edit > Merge/Compare Record…

Richard

To select more than one record in the any of the tabs in the records window you need to select one

Hold down the CNTL key and use the mouse to select the others to match with

Hope that helps
