Family Historian versus Legacy #new
Edward Sneithe
When I converted from Rootsmagic I addressed all the UDF and made modifications in RM to ensure that everything was recognized in FH. I also created all my custom facts in FH so that during the import all the RM facts were found and FH did not have to create any for me. It was a bit of work but IMO was well worth it.

Now, back to UDF's. I've discovered that a lot of them relate to a button that Legacy had (near the bottom) which was a direct link to the same record on Family Search. This was picked up when I uploaded the gedcom to my website here's an example: |

Lorna, I think Mark is replying to Sources.

Mark, when replying to a post please can you give some context. We have no idea whose post you are referring to when you say ‘I agree’ because there are already over 100 posts in this very long thread.

https://heritage.one-name.net/ft/getperson.php?personID=I7&tree=Heritages Interestingly, it is still there even though I uploaded the gedcom from FH. So, my inclination is to ignore the UDF's. and just get on with it. What would you do? Derek |

First, from now on I'm going to take on board Lorna's suggestion and start a new topic each time I come across something new.

Mike,
I won't pretend to answer for Derek, but since I'm still stuck in Legacy till I get my head wrapped around FH, I will answer you from a Legacy user's viewpoint. When using a Source in Legacy, we do indeed cite a Master Source. After selecting that Source another dialog box opens presenting a list of Master Sources to choose from, and/or create a new Source which may or may not be a Master, but that goes further than this discussion. Having selected a Source, we again are presented with another dialog box giving you the ability to provide Details for the current record. This does NOT alter the Source for all references to it. The comparison between the programs that you provided earlier should be of great assistance. Mark Trevithick |

Mike,
That will be a great help to me! Thank you very much for making the comparison. Mark Trevithick |

To OP - I'm new to FH coming from RootsMagic. I was initially frustrated because I was looking through the lens of making it do things the way I'm accustomed. I decided to let go of all my old thinking and learn the software on its own terms. I downloaded "Getting the Most out of Family Historian 5" and the sample files and starting working through them. It's a little out of date but it helps you to understand the tool.
Rather than importing, I decided to start over and key people in from scratch. (a genealogy do-over) I've accumulated a lot of crap through the decades, especially from porting through the various software packages Roots II -> Roots III-> Roots IV/UFT -> TMG -> RootsMagic Each program had its strengths and weaknesses. It helps to come at each program based on its own terms. You wouldn't try to learn a foreign language by applying your native language syntax and just translating the words. So, instead of saying my old program does X and fh does not, think about the problem X solved for you and ask how fh can solve that problem. Each time a newbie posts a question like yours, it brings out multiple approaches to a solution. Jackson's example for comparing people was a light bulb moment for me. There are lots of ways to approach a problem. My best advise is to start a small data set and work through some ideas - a sandbox to play in. Example, in TMG I was very much a source 'splitter' but found that cumbersome. In RootsMagic I endeavored to become a source 'lumper'. That worked well for me. In FH I find that it word better with splitting and I don't find it cumbersome because of the ease with which I can locate a source without having to resort to an arcane naming code. Those sources that I still lump (mostly Ancestry or FamilySearch databases) I can quickly find in the Records Window - Sources tab by typing a single letter in the "type" box (p=public records, s=school or social security, etc) Once I see the source and click on it, then go to Source - prepare citation to existing source... easy peasy |

That's interesting - it had never occurred to me (and I've been using FH from v2) that I could get the ability to expand two records at once - one in the Records window and one in the list window. Thanks for that. Just on a personal note, I rarely need to compare two individuals with that level of detail of data - normally I can get the requisite over-view from having two charts open at once (that IS easily possible, whereas two records at once is trickier). The thing that I do need two of at once is two source records, where I might have one type of source open but would really like to compare it to another to see if I've described the new one as well as I have done in the past. Derek, may I suggest that each time you discover a new problem you start a new topic about it, with a suitable title?
Some people who have never used Legacy may automatically ignore all posts in the "Family Historian versus Legacy" thread assuming they are of no interest, and some will have "muted" that thread so they will not be seeing all the recent discussions. But some of your questions will be of wider interest. For example your latest question is about UDFs, the previous one was about creating new sources or citations, a previous one was about sharing a source with multiple facts, etc. These questions might be of interest to many new users, not just those who have come from Legacy. A suitable title for each new topic will make it clearer what is being discussed and might reach more people. |

Derek, I am surprised you had difficulty finding information about UDF. In FH itself, Help > Search Help… and lookup UDF gives basic details. In the FHUG Knowledge Base, searching for UDF lists much the same articles as Helen provided. In the FHUG Forums, a Search for UDF provides a great many results including the same articles.

There is information about handling UDFs in the Knowledge Base (at Importing to Family Historian – Family Historian User Group – Knowledge Base (fhug.org.uk) and Handling Uncategorised Data Fields – Family Historian User Group – Knowledge Base (fhug.org.uk) ).
From experience your past posts, this won’t be everything you need, but if you start by reading hat and then come back with the questions it raises? (It might help the KB editors improve the articles).
(P.S. Yes, please carry on.)

New problem discovered today, pretty well all of my Legacy imported names have UDF's - by the way I've only just discovered what those initials stand for . So I have about 9000. Is there a simple way to sort that out? Just clicking names in the "List" doesn't seem to show what's wrong. Derek |

Derek,
Do keep those questions coming, they promote discussion and may eventually bring about a more intuitive program. Family Historian is often praised for it's power but not for being the most intuitive program to new users, I know I found it a little daunting during my first trial and have read similar. Discussions such as yours give me ideas for future video presentations and I do intend one on Data Viewing and Comparison as I also found FH a little short on "man on the street" style user videos.
