Note for Addresses
dave@...
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can add a note to an Address?
I use Address and Place for events and whilst you can add a note to a Place you don't seem able to do the same for an address. The issue is that I have a lot of addresses in Salford, which is obviously the Place and still exists. However a lot of the area was either bombed during the war or was the subject of slum clearance in the 50s and 60s. It would be nice to add a note to the Address to identify where it was. At the moment all I can think of is to add a note to every person and event, which is both a pain and goes against single instancing. Thanks Dave |

Dave, In FH, the Place structure and the Address structure are very different.
Place details are held in a separate record shared by every Place field with the same place-name. So details such as Notes, Lat/Longitude, Media, etc, attached to the Place record are associated with every synonymous Place field.
Address details are a simple local text field attached to a fact. The same Address details attached to different facts are completely independent. Tools > Work with Data > Addresses allows all identical copies to be edited simultaneously. (Many would prefer Address to behave like Place but it doesn’t.)
Here are some workarounds: 1) Each Address field has subsidiary fields including Postal Code that could identify where it is. Unfortunately, you must repeat that Postal Code wherever the same Address is used. 2) Add a Source Citation or a shared Note record to the fact that holds the identification details. But again that must be repeated wherever the same Address is used. 3) Move the Address details into the Place field and don’t use the Address field at all. Then each Address & Place combination is a place-name with an associated Place record where you can record whatever you like. The ‘Rearrange Address and Place Parts’ plugin can perform the global move. See FHUG Knowledge Base ‘Working with Places and Addresses’ Places Only:- https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/working-with-places-and-addresses-for-new-users/

Further to Mikes reply, and depending on what use you make of the Address data (eg inclusion on reports / inclusion in website, etc.,), you could include the note as "hidden text" on the address record. Although slightly at a tangent, I have a church name in the Address record, with its town in the hidden text brackets - viz. "St Mary's Church, [[Bridgwater]]". Everything from the comma onwards is excluded from reports and on my website, but is visible on the baseline Address record.

Dave, I have my foot in two camps here, sadly FH does not support this at present, I believe it will come but who knows when. I can say my previous software and one other does support this and I have a massive investment of the type you are trying to create. I believe the free version of that software does still support these Place Details enhancements but I find FH superior in other ways. Once I start repeating data entry I know something is wrong. A large number of researchers strive to enhance this data, we see the desire to know such detailed on every genealogy based TV show so I do look forward to the day it is introduced. In the meantime I maintain such valuable data in my previous software and use FH for data crunching and most other things. Yes, that might work and all duplicates of the Address can be edited via Tools > Work with Data > Addresses. The [[ privacy ]] bracketed text can be included or excluded in Reports, etc, as required, except in Diagrams that cannot exclude it currently.

The issue is that I have a lot of addresses in Salford, which is obviously the Place and still exists.Arguably the comment belongs not to the address but to an area in Salford. So do you attach a note on "Redevelopment in Salford" which lists groups of places that disappeared, when they disappeared and the modern day area/streets, to the relevant Salford Place record. |

How about finding an old street map of Salford and take a scan of the area then add it to the old address

That is the problem Victor. How do you attach a Media image to an Address field?

I was not at my computer and was thinking out of the box. How about this possibility. Save a map of the area. The go to the address of the person in question and prompt the nedi box then load the saved map I wont be at my computer the necxt few days so will experiment when I csn

I also use the “hidden text” feature where I have same addresses in different places, and I don’t know postcode or any other detail to distinguish them apart. For instance: 8 High Street [[Redhill]], 8 High Street [[Coulsdon]], both entirely different locations!

Victor, may I respectfully suggest you wait until you can test your theory at your computer before posting ideas that might confuse less experienced users? I think you will find it is impossible to attach a Media image of a map.

I was thinking logically
Put it this way
If one has a certificate one puts details of the certificate with the addition of an image
For an address put details of the address with an image of a street map of the area.
I much prefer this to using latitude and longitude figures.

Victor,
You can link an image (e.g. of a certificate) to a source record, and you can link an image (e.g. a map) to a Place record. But you cannot add an image directly to an address, because addresses are not records. That is the point.
Similarly, as the original questioner pointed out, you can add a note to a Place record but not to an address. He did consider adding a note to every fact where the address is used but that would be time consuming and involve unnecessary duplication. The same would be true of adding an image to every fact where the address is used.
One workaround which was suggested is to move address details into the place record and not use the address field at all. That results in a huge number of place records but some people do it that way. However the original question is specifically about address fields, not Place records.

I can only repeat that FH does not support this at present, several other packages do and I understand the desirability. However each bespoke workaround will require a bespoke correction to unearth the possible advantages if/when CP provide support for such desired embellishments to sites/addresses.
