Re-ordering family relationships

John Ball

Hello All,

One of my collateral ancestors, Mary Ann Smallwood (1814-1884), married Thomas Clarke Bretnor in Birmingham in 1835.

The couple had no children, but Mary Ann subsequently gave birth to four children between 1842 and 1853, probably to different fathers. She gave one of the fathers a fictitious name. All four children carried the same surname (Bretnor).

In FH (7.0.11) I decided to treat Mary Ann as if she had three partner relationships:
1. Her legitimate marriage - but no children.
2. A generic "Unknown" partner - producing three children (in 1842, 1844, & 1848).
3. The "Unknown" partner with a fictitious name - producing one child (in 1853).

The FH focus window displays these three relationships, but not in the correct chronological order (see screen grab, below).

Is there any quick way of re-ordering the relationships so the one producing the fourth child appears last? I tried the "Re-order out-of-sequence data" option in the Tools menu, but it failed to correct the sequence of relationships.

I would be most grateful for any helpful suggestions.

Regards

John Ball

Double click Mary Ann Smallwood to view her Property Box. In the Spouse area use the small up and down arrows to reorder her spouses/partners into the correct order.

Hello John,

Yes, in the Property Box of Mary Ann in the Spouse section the tabs are in the wrong order.

Select a tab that is in the wrong position and use the small black arrows on the right to move it.

The automatic reordering does not work because there are no Marriage dates for it to use.

( I know it could have used the children’s birth dates but FH is not that intuitive! )

See FHUG Knowledge Base “Sorting Children, Spouses & Facts into Date Order”:

https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/sorting-children-spouses-facts-into-order/

That explains the manual techniques when auto-sorting fails.

Brillant!! Problem solved!!

Thank you Trevor and Mike. Your solution worked like magic.

The solution was actually staring me in the face because I always have the property box on view, docked to the side of the focus window.
I think I failed to recognise the solution myself, because in the property box, the up and down arrows in the spouse area actually move the tabs left or right rather than up or down.

Thanks again, both of you.

Regards,

John
