FH7 newbie question re. importing TMG data

Ian Saunders

Hi,

Many years ago I collected all my family history data (>2000 people) in the now defunct "The Master Genealogist" and saved it all to disk. I've just bought FH7 because it reads TMG data and I want to continue my research. I've just done a "vanilla" import of my .tmg file, which has brought in all my names and relationships, but none of the dates or notes.

Is anyone familiar with the TMG import process, and can tell me what I need to do to get all my data into FH7?

Many thanks in anticipation!

Regards

Ian Saunders

There's a specific section on Importing from TMG.

The topic is a perennial source of discussion in the FHUG forums, so it's worth searching there for any specific problems you have after following the advice in the KnowledgeBase.

Ian, the advice mentioned by Helen is excellent and cross-refers to advice on the FH website.

The direct import process should bring in all your data.

Which version of TMG were you using?

The advice explains how to update to a later TMG version 9 that may update your data to a format that is more recognisable to FH.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the swift reply!

I was using TMG Gold Edition version 4.x (last used in about 2007, when I copied all the folders and their contents to CD-ROM). I no longer have a computer that will run TMG (I'm on Windows 10), even though I have the installation disks. I haven't yet looked at the info Helen recommends, but as I don't have a working, installed version of TMG, I suspect that I won't be able to update my data.

I will have a look through the advice on the FH website!

Regards

Ian

Ian, the TMG v9 provided in the advice does work in Windows 10 and should update your data.

No harm in trying anyway!
