Fan Chart - content beyond 5th gen

Tom H

Is there any capability in fh7 to produce a more legible fan chart? This side-by-side compares the 6th to 9th gens with a fan chart from another family tree software (fh7 to the left):

There just is not enough room for names, let alone other data further out than the 5th.

Sideways printing seems to be the solution. Also the comparison fan is >180degrees so the boxes can be a little fatter.

I see a fhug KB article for "V5 only" that kluges two charts in an overlay but looks like it requires manual entry for each person beyond the 4th generation. That sounds like a laborious one-off. Is there any way to set up default settings to do a better job?

Yes, as you have found, it is possible as illustrated by the FHUG Knowledge Base > Download > Diagram Types > 5th Generation Sideways Fan:

https://fhug.org.uk/kb/download/5th-generation-sideways-fan-3/

Despite what it says, it does work in FH v7.

However, it will take some time and patience to design the dozens of wedge-shaped boxes with data references and the text at the correct angle.

I have printed out to the 7th generation without any wrapping problems for the text (you can see there is a problem with the 8th generation), so going out to the 5th is no problem at all. But I am printing a full circle and it is set to print on 2 sheets of A4 paper in landscape.

I prefer the design of your ‘other family tree’ software, however, which seems far more sensible. Can you tell us the maker of that software?

All the best.

I see this is an old Wishlist item having only 9 votes and a score of 31 (https://www.fhug.org.uk/wishlist/wldisplay.php?wlwlref=515) so that probably explains no movement on it in over a decade. My vote would not change it by very much as it is not an Essential, compared to other things. One can work around it by exporting to other software.

The comparison chart is from RM8 and has its own problem with loss of visible data when the box gets too narrow for a long name that needs two lines but it is generally more legible (or, more accurately, the data is more complete) after several generations. It rotates the text by 90 degrees after the 5th generation. And it's not interactive; it is purely an output.
