Saving Photos
June <mai_ling@...>
I have recently downloaded Family Historian as I want to trial it prior to leaving my current programme. I am just not sure and cannot understand where and how it saves photos.
In my current programme which is Legacy I have a folder within my pictures which is called Legacy. When I find an item, photo, census, media etc, I send it to the folder named Legacy and then load it from there into my programme file. When I close my Legacy file I save a backup on my backup drive and it also gives me the option of saving my pictures, documents, media into a folder called Media which it also saves in my backup drive. I find this easy to work with. Could someone please advise how Family Historian works as I am not sure where I should be saving them etc. Is the programme just making a link to where I have the item - ie the Legacy file, or is it making a new file/folder and if so where? I have tried looking through help but am not understanding. Thank you - June |

Welcome June, Family Historian (FH) can operate in one of two ways (or even a mixture of the two). You choose when you add each media file which method you want to use.
FH can keep its media files in a separate folder such as your Pictures Legacy folder. It is then up to you to backup those separate media files.
FH can also keep its media files in a Media folder inside the Project folder structure (which I think is like Legacy). Then the FH Backup command can include those Media files automatically. This is the recommended method.
There is much useful advice in the FHUG Knowledge Base https://fhug.org.uk/kb/: https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/understanding-projects/ explains the Project structure and Media options. https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/importing-to-family-historian/ explains importing to FH with a section dedicated to Legacy.

Thank you Mike for the welcome and the information.
What you have written makes sense. I think what I will do is to:
Rename Legacy file to Family History (or similar)
When I enter a media item into Family Historian I will take it from the Legacy file and tell FM to save it to the Media folder inside the Project folder. That will ensure that it is going to be backed up automatically when the file is backed up.
Thank you for the links you included I’m sure they will be helpful.
