Thank you, everyone, for these thoughtful responses. They will help me to know how to proceed. I think your suggestion, Lorna, is a good one. I think I shall endeavor towards that direction for now. Linux is out of my field of expertise, but I know many who prefer it. I appreciate this forum and the responses very much!

You will have seen from other replies that it is not necessary to use Ancestral Sources, and some people don’t use it at all. FH is indeed a stand alone program which will do everything you need it to do.
Personally I find AS a huge help for recording census data but I don’t often use it for other types of data, partly for historical reasons (early versions of AS only handled censuses and so I had developed my own workflow and style for BMD entries, which I have maintained for consistency).
Ancestral Sources is an aid to data entry but doesn’t do anything which couldn’t be done manually, although it does it very much faster and more consistently! It’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with FH itself so that you understand the relationships between the different types of record and how to enter data manually. Then you will be able to understand what AS does if you decide to use it.
Another option, if you are using FH version 7, is that it now has the capacity for you to use Data Entry Assistants (DEAs) within FH itself, which do the same job of helping to automate a consistent style of data entry. (Although at present the number of DEAs is still a bit limited because they are written by, and for, users but over time the available number will grow). It’s likely that many new users will start to use DEAs while many long-term users who have used AS in the past will continue to use it because they are familiar with it.
But do experiment with manual data entry first, so that you know how it works and you can make an informed decision about whether to use AS and how you want to set the various options it offers.

I'm a bit worried about trying out various plug-ins until I get used to the program itself. As a stand-alone program, will FH do what I need it to do without adding something like Ancestral Sources? I very much agree with David Wilkinson's method. I grab a good jpeg of the census page, yellow-highlight the person or family using Irfanview. I then import it as a citation (and source) to the FH media for the key person. I then cite-back, to that one media file, all the parties of interest on it.
If the census page is difficult to read, I'll often snip the ancestry/FMP/Genealogist transcription and insert it on to the jpeg as well. Snagit is a best-of-all tool for this kind of work. Beneficial tip - 1841 (and some other years') census page image quality from Genealogist is generally far better than the others. With regard to AS, It's a very good application, but I've found that you've got to be using it regularly in order to be able to readily recall the various user steps. Leave it for a few weeks and one has to do a `full restart'. The multiple aspects of our wonderful FH program are complex to recall at times, and that's quite enough for me. To that end I have created myself a `Family Historian Hints & Tips' document as a quick reference prompt for those less-used functions. It's three pages long and growing! I do not, cannot, use Ancestral Sources. I manage everything within FamilyHistorian alone. I kicked Microsoft into touch when I retired - too much money, apart from anything else. Welcome Kathy, To be pedantic, Ancestral Sources (AS) is a companion Windows program installed alongside Family Historian (FH), whereas Plugins are small text scripts installed within FH. It is perfectly feasible to enter everything that AS enters using just FH but can get repetitively tedious when for example entering a Census household. Each member of the household needs Census & Birth & Occupation facts with repetitive Date, Place, Address, Citation, etc, although that is simplified with copy & paste. It is certainly advisable to perform a few such data captures entirely in FH to appreciate how AS is streamlining the data entry. AS focusses on the popular BMD Certificates, BMB Parish Records, Electoral Roll and Census records, so everything else such as Education, Military records, Wills, Probate, etc, must be entered directly into FH.

In my humble opinion it is a personal choice. I do not use Ancestral Sources, I did look into it but decided it was not for me partly because I was used to managing without such a tool being a refugee from TMG and already had over 20,000 people in my file. I do not link every image to a person, I store a census image for example in a folder for the 'head of the household' then copy a short-cut into all other members of that households personal folders. I do link images to Facts where they are of particular significance and I want them to appear on my web site or in reports. One of the great things about FH is it allows people to work in many different ways suiting their personal needs. Ancestral Sources is great I use it all the time. As an example
when it comes to census details you put all the names under one
image and all the names are linked to that image. If you did not

Welcome Steve, With the Census event selected open the Citation window by clicking the yellow scroll with pencil icon at bottom of yellow Citations pane. Then its cog Menu has ‘Show Source Record’s Citations in Result Window’ that lists every citation of the chosen Source.

I am still finding my way round Family Historian 7, having moved away from a Mac.
I have been entering Census Returns using Ancestral Sources and all is working well. If I view an individual's Facts window, I can see the Census entry, but how can I list the people linked to that Citation?

If you are using what Ancestral Sources calls 'Method 1' (which
creates a separate source for each census household) the key is
the Source record. To go to the Source record, select the census fact in the Facts tab of the individual's Property Box and then click the blue right-pointing arrow at the bottom of the 'Sources for' pane. This will open the Source record in its Property Box. (You can also open the Source record by selecting it in the Sources tab of the Records window). The Text from Source tab will show the details of everyone in the household. You can get a full list of all the citations to this source by clicking the cog menu icon at the top right of the Source Property box (in V7) and selecting Show Source Record's Citations in Results Window. In the Results window double-clicking on any of the records listed in the Records column will display that record in the Property Box. Double-clicking on any of the cells in the Citation column will open the Property Box with the focus on the exact fact which is citing the Source. Lorna Lorna On 12/02/2021 13:40, Steve Miller

Steve, there's a couple of ways.
