Locked Ancestry subscription discount

Well, I did that first and got zero hits (in both Title and Keyword boxes) so I thought I’d try a general search.

Bill, I am an ancestry.co.uk subscriber and, like you, have zero hits for Henshaw in the card catalog. If I switch to ancestry.com I do see the three hits that you describe. So this could be a licensing issue, as in some records might be licensed to be accessed only via/in certain countries? But the ability to switch between Ancestry websites makes a mockery of that theory.

Gill, in his example Bill is searching the card catalog as in Search > Card Catalog. Not a general search.

Sue and Trevor,

Thanks for the info.

So it looks like Ancestry has changed from the "old" days.  Now it looks like with a World subscription the same information is available regardless of which Ancestry site you are subscribed to.

Thanks all!
Bill

Sue,

That is part of what I was interested in knowing.  Thank you.

The other part is the total number of entries in the card catalog which can be seen at the very top of the list if you don't enter any search criteria.

Bill

Trevor Rix

Ah, yes, Sue has the answer. Clearing the "Only records from the UK and Ireland" box makes the difference.

Hi Bill

I’m in the UK. Just tried as you suggested. If the box for UK & Ireland ticked I got no results. Unticked the box and got this.

Thanks Gerald,

So it looks like all the same records are available to US and Canadian subscribers (it would be too big a coincidence if you had the exact same number of sources as I do, but they were different).

Anyone from the UK want to check for me?

Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill, I subscribe to Ancestry.ca.

I also see 33,105 total items in the card catalogue. When I search Henshaw in the title box it returns three results.

I am thinking that maybe what I am seeing is different because I am subscribed to ancestry.com.

The reason I thought this might be the case is that as an ancestry.com subscriber, if I go to ancestry.co.uk and click on search the card catalog, it says there are only 1,918 sources in the catalog and they are all for the UK.  I don't see any sources for the U.S.  On ancestry.com it shows there are 33,105 sources in the catalog and these include countries from all over the world.

If you are an ancestry.co.uk subscriber, do you see any sources if you search the catalog for "Henshaw"?

Gill, did you just do a regular search?  I was doing a card catalog search looking for sources.  Click on Search, select Card Catalog, and then put Henshaw in the Title field and hit enter.  That will show all sources in the card catalog that have Henshaw in the name.

Henshaw is a surname... mine.  :-)

Trevor,

I could have sworn that in the past I was able to search on Ancestry.co.uk, but not actually see the images of the documents.  Now I am able to.  Very interesting.  Good to know.

Actually, not all records are available on all Ancestry sites.  Just as an example, if you search the catalog for Henshaw, there are three sources in the catalog on Ancestry.com and none on Ancestry.co.uk.  I'm not sure what all the differences are.

George,

No, unfortunately it doesn't work on Ancestry.com.

You need to cancel your current subscription first, get the confirmatory email and then wait until your subscription has actually expired and you only have guest access.  Then you can either use the code you have been given our just Google ancestry 50% discount offer.  You can get the discount and/or see it on Ancestry page only after you have just access as a guest. You don't lose any trees or information.i am on my 5th year of doing this.

Hi Trevor
Just read your email which says look at links to find the discount. I’m probably being obtuse for which I apologise. My membership is due for renewal soon. I’m on UK and Ireland and it will be £119.99. The link you suggest leads me to what looks like a discount membership form where my membership would be £69.99 for 6m or £139.98 for a year. Ancestry say I can upgrade my membership to full for £179.99. The discount form says £99.99 for 6m or £199.98. Am I doing this wrong?

Sorry to ask this question again, but how do you get the discount to renew your subscription to Ancestry?

I did this for the first time a month or so ago and it works like a dream! You don’t lose access to trees or DNA stuff, just the records until you resubscribe. To get the discount, you have to be logged into your account when you resubscribe using

Hello John,
I  was wondering how your "new subscription" worked out. Mine is due to expire the end of this month and I see the link to the discount is still active. I am concerned that I will lose my tree because I have spent over a decade working on it. I realise that I can upload my gedcom again, but the Ancestry source links could disappear etc. Did you have any problems linking your "old" tree to your new account? If you can remember how you went about it, please can you share. Thanks Jayne
