New problem with MyHeritage service on Family Historian 7

john@...

Six days ago I upgraded the copy of Family Historian on my desktop computer from 6.2 to 7, and for the first five days all worked perfectly. This morning I received the notification "MyHeritage service is temporarily unavailable" with a hyperlink invitation to "Learn more..." in a small popup window on my screen. The hyperlink leads to https://www.family-historian.co.uk/notification?id=myheritage-stopped, which contains only the word "Notification" in large type between the navigation menu at the top of the screen and the grey region containing links for Additional Information, Share this, and Recent Posts, in the lower part of the screen.

This means that although I am still getting automatic internet data matching for Findmypast, with the usual message "Findmypast matches..." and a number, and with a working hyperlink, all I get for MyHeritage is "MyHeritage searching...".

I have tried making sure that I am still logged in to MyHeritage, with which I have an account. As far as I can tell, I am.

The situation is more complicated than it may seem. I run Family Historian on Linux (currently Debian), using Wine, and have done so since version 4 of FH. One consequence (I assume) of this is that the Web Search Window in Family Historian is not reliable - so, for example, clicking on the log-in link for MyHeritage in that window has no effect whatever - and so I have always viewed it and Findmypast using an external browser instead.

It would be very nice to get automatic internet data matching back for MyHeritage. It still works on my ancient laptop, on which I have not updated Family Historian to version 7, but it would be a nuisance running the desktop and the laptop next to each other. Does anyone have any suggestions for getting the data matching back that do not involve me having to procure a computer with Windows? I do appreciate that this is likely to be rather a niche problem, but any suggestions would be gratefully received.

John Gibson.

That was also reported in the FHUG Forum ‘My Heritage hints not working’ but on a native Windows system.

https://www.fhug.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=18382

However, the originator has not mentioned it again, so it was presumably temporary.

Thank you, Mike; I had not noticed that post, and any hint towards a solution is welcome.

However, unlike its originator, I have received no message about the cache. I suspect that my problem is a different one.

John,

I posted an almost identically worded enquiry in this group this morning, before coming across your post, so I've deleted mine.

I upgraded to FH7 yesterday and discovered that I've got the same problem, so it's not unique to you.

I'm on Windows 10, so I'm guessing that it's not an issue with you running FH on Linux.

I've checked my Internet Data Matches settings and they're the same as they were on FH6.

I'm getting a similar error message in a pop up window which, like John, leads to a Notification page.  In addition the MyHeritage hints appear as normal.  I'm using windows 10 and have upgraded to FH7.

It looks as though there has been some movement on this. The Family Historian web page at https://www.family-historian.co.uk/notification?id=myheritage-stopped now tells me more. Rather than simply saying "Notification", it says

Notification

MyHeritage Service Has Stopped

The MyHeritage service has stopped. It should restart automatically if you re-open the current project or open another project. If the problem recurs, you may be able to stop it happening by closing Family Historian and restarting it. If that does not fix the problem, you should try closing Family Historian and restarting your PC.

If restarting your PC does not solve the problem, the most likely reason is that Family Historian is having difficulty accessing the MyHeritage cache file. This can happen if another program on your PC is interfering with the cache file and preventing Family Historian from accessing it when it needs to. The most likely candidate for a program that might do this is a program that automatically replicates files to a cloud drive – such as Dropbox or OneDrive. If that is the issue, you may be able to fix the problem by moving your entire project folder to another location on your PC.

If you do not use the MyHeritage service and just want to stop the message from appearing, you can do this by disabling the MyHeritage service on the ‘Internet Data Matches’ tab of Preferences (accessible from the Tools menu).

I have tried these, but without success. Perhaps others will have better fortune.

Nope - I've still got the problem as well.

It seems like there are two different notifications people are receiving, but both with the same effect.  One is "MyHeritage service has stopped", which is referred to on FH's web page, and the other is "MyHeritage service is temporarily unavailable", the link for which takes you to the same FH web page - I've been getting the latter notification ever since I upgraded to FH7.  That said, the first thing I noticed when I opened FH7 this morning was that no notification had appeared, but clicking on various hints still showed "MyHeritage searching..." (in black), until I clicked on another and it showed the more familiar "MyHeritage matches (pending)" link (in green), which opened MH in a new tab in my browser and listed the pending matches for that individual.

Returning to FH7, I noticed  that the hints were now flickering and that the numbers on them were rapidly updating at random across the screen.  Clicking on those that had previously showed "MyHeritage searching..." I found that they had changed to "MyHeritage matches (pending)".  Opening each of my projects in turn, I found that, after a few minutes, the MyHeritage hints began updating.

I should mention that, even though I'm a OneDrive user, I hadn't followed any of the advice given in the solution offered by FH, in fact I hadn't done anything out of the ordinary, the problem just righted itself - I appreciate that this won't come as any comfort to those who are still experiencing it.  Of course, it remains to be seen whether the glitch returns at a later date.

I am now in the same position as Fruitbat - if that really is their name - in that my automatic internet data matching hints have returned. Which is very nice, and long may they last.

John,

'Fruitbat' is a nickname that has stayed with me since my teens, thanks to a Monty Python sketch in which John Cleese's character tries to obtain a license for his pet fish.  As the scene plays out it is revealed that he has several pets, including a fruit bat, all called Eric.  It could have been so much worse, I could have ended up being called Eric the halibut.

I have the same username on the FHUG forum, where my real name is automatically inserted at the end of a post, but I keep forgetting that that doesn't happen on here, although I did remember to add it in my first reply way up the page.
