Upgrade to version 7
Marion Woolgar
I downloaded Version 7 this morning and I have been using it today on a
duplicate copy of my project file and I am very glad that I did it that way! I have been using Family Historian since Version 1 and each successive major upgrade has introduced changes and the move to Version 6 was something of a major challenge that took me some time to work through. However, the Version 7 upgrade has left me bewildered by the changes that have been made. I'm not an IT professional or specialist, I'm just an amateur family historian of somewhat advancing years. Most of my customizations to the Record Window, Property Box and Source Box have disappeared. I have read the "Notes on Upgrading to Version 7" about restoring Property Box customizations and I was working my way through them until I reached items marked 1, 2, & 3 which, after telling me what could be done, then strongly recommended that I don't do it because settings will be lost somewhere else. I am now completely bemused and confused. Will Calico Pie be publishing a manual to go with Version 7? I certainly hope so - and very, very soon! I have almost 30,000 entries in my main, ONS, Project alone and I have spent upwards of 18 years entering all my previously held manual records into Family Historian and I can't risk not being able to find my data now, let alone the possibility losing track of it completely. I think that I am going to have to uninstall Version 7 and reinstall Version 6. At least then I will be able to get on with entering my data until such time as I can get my head around this. I just hope that I haven't wasted my pension on this upgrade. Best wishes, Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex

Hello Marion, I sympathise with you as I had the same dilemma and going by previous upgrades I eventually decided to go along with what Calico have set version 7 to. Although this may entail some editing (eventually) of old sources/citations etc. Will take some getting used to version 7. Having problems already. Derek

As with each major upgrade of FH not only is the Project data changed but also the customisations are affected too! So you were wise
to keep your Project data separate, but did you backup your customisations? The 'Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings' plugin performs that backup. Without that backup, reverting FH V6 may be as difficult as sticking with FH V7. You will have to provide very detailed descriptions of the problems you are facing with your customisations in order for others to help you resolve them, or you could attach copies of the scripts. But that is far easier in the FHUG Forums than via these Emails. https://www.fhug.org.uk/forum/ Yuletide Greetings, Mike Tate

Dear Mike,
Yes, all my custom settings are backed-up. I also have V6, including custom settings, running on a 2nd laptop, with all my project data as per my Tuesday night back-up. I may be getting on a bit, but I'm not daft - yet! My major concern is the Sources & Citation boxes. Now all that I can see is the Source title and nothing else except a load of white space. I used to be able to see the date that the data was entered, the reference where I got it from, the source text and a notes box - all that I needed to know. What on earth was wrong with them the way that they were? There is also mention of "Source templates" without any explanation of what these are, or how you create them, or how they differ from "generic citations". Best wishes, Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex

I'm glad you are not daft. You'd be surprised at what I sometimes get asked.
Click the Edit Source Citation button (between Add Citation and Copy Citation buttons). That shows both Source record and Citation details together in one multi-tab dialogue. Use Help > Search Help... and enter Source Templates then click List Topics. The top entry 'Sources and Source Templates' explains it all. Mike Tate

Yes, If you login at the Store page, then go to the 'Upgrade Now' option in the store, there will be two fields displayed to paste your existing License name and number, and it applies the discount relevant. Mine was a v6 license and applied 30% discount. Best Wishes Neil.

I am going to wait to upgrade until most/all of the problems are ironed out and a good resource of helpful questions and answers are on the Forum. I'm quite IT literate, I thought, but upgrading to something which now appears to be so different is more than concerning although my files are nowhere near the size of yours. Unfortunately I don't have the option of a second laptop to run it on. Even after several years of using it I still find I am learning version 6 and the printed manual is an integral part of my learning so I won't be upgrading until that becomes available. I am someone that likes to be consistent with my data entries for sources and to know I am doing it correctly but even then I know I failed with that in V6, which annoys me, and I'm still working through the sources to get them consistent. Maybe I shouldn't bother if the upgrade to 7 is going to change it all anyway. Liz

For those who have been asking about a new manual or a 'How-to' book (which may or may not be produced one day, I have no idea) can I suggest that you make full use of the other resources which are available: 1. For an overview of all the new features of V7 read "What's New in Version 7" on the FH website: https://www.family-historian.co.uk/whats-new-in-7 This introduces all the key new features one at a time, with some illustrations. There is a lot to take in with the new version, so just concentrate on one feature at a time. 2. When you are using V7, always look for a Help button in whatever window or small dialogue box you have open. That will take you to the relevant pages in the FH Help files which explain in greater detail what you can do in the current context. If there are some you need to refer to frequently, print them out. 3. Do make use of the new-look Knowledge Base at FHUG:
https://fhug.org.uk/kb/ This has been completely re-written to
incorporate advice about all the features of V7 as well as
continuing to give advice on earlier versions of FH. It is much
easier to navigate than the old Knowledge Base. Start by
clicking on the blue link How to Use the Knowledge Base so
that you can find your way round. Huge thanks are due to Helen
(ColeValleyGirl) and other volunteers who have been working on it
tirelessly for months behind the scenes! Lorna

Re the new Knowledge Base, we haven’t got all the FH7 content in yet – volunteers to help are more than welcome!

Me too. There's one strange omission in the Narrative Reports (the ability to start a sentence with a new-paragraph) that is pretty much a show stopper for me, while I'd quite like to see other people's experiences of working with templated sources before I take the plunge - which I do intend to do.
Thirty year career me, so it doesn't scare me....
So far as I understand it, v7 will give me the ability to be prompted to record source information to a greater level of detail, and more consistently than before, for each type of source (whatever I mean by that). For instance, a source type that I've just started using needs 2 dates recording. If I understand correctly, I will be able to set up a specific template for these sources that will enable me to be prompted to record both dates. But it can be my decision to make whether to create my own template, or to use one of the off the shelf styles and have to remember to record both dates. I'm writing this to in effect say that I think that you're being sensible to think first. As for whether you should carry on trying to make your stuff consistent, I've no certainty. I don't know myself! One area that you might profitably look at - and this is a bit of a guess - is whether you can easily tell from your current source records, whether your source was the real thing, an image of it, a transcript, a summary or an index. Because those might be important in setting up the new data. Hmm. I think I've just given myself a job, never mind you! As I said, I'm just trying to help people to think. (Which helps me as well!) I tried to upgrade and got confused!
The basket shows V7 with a price column value of £49.96. Then the Total below says £59.95 Then below that, following discount application, is £41.96 What's going on? What are the correct figures please? I questioned this via the on-line query system a couple of days ago but have received no reply so far.

I had the same result as you did but did not see the discount
application and paid £59.95 I did find things a bit confusing. Never had problems upgrading
in previous years

Roy, 49.96 is the full price excluding VAT 59.95 is the full price including VAT 41.96 is the price after discount including VAT (30% of or 17.99) John

Don't know why you are getting the confusing pricing. I upgraded no problem with the full price being £59.95, less a discount of £17.99 = £41.96. It was quite clear on the FH website once I had input my product code and I was billed £41.96 Perhaps try again and see if the kink has been resolved.

Victor When you clicked on the "upgrade" icon in the FH store, a page appears directing you to Free Upgrade Offers and asking you to input licence information in order to receive the discount. Did you miss this or purchase by a different route?

Additional question on
the same issue please. Is there a time limit on redeeming your
free upgrade associated with buying V6 earlier this year?
Thank You,

I can't recall exactly but think the free upgrade offer was for those who had just bought V6 it could have said something like those on V6 whether just bought or had an upgrade. That would have been clearer

Roy This is what I paid. The price shows the full price ex VAT, the VAT then the total. The final price of £41.96 is the full price minus the v6 30% discount - you obviously put in your V6 license code on the upgrade option. Best Wishes Neil.
|
|
Victor, I did the same thing. In my defence, the upgrade option wasn't very clear.
I contacted support at Calico Pie and gave them my V6 info and they have kindly credited £18 back to my card. Excellent customer relations IMO
