Hints/tips when moving to Family Historian 7 (and Ancestral Sources 7)

Paul Terrill

Hi all,

Does anyone have any hints or tips when upgrading to FM7 and AS 7 please? I am currently using FH 6.2.7 and AS 5.2.0.

For example, will be settings and preferences and expressions etc automatically move or do I need to do something extra. I would rather not try to remember what defaults I have changed in the current version.

I have bought FH7 and downloaded both FH7 and AS7. I am excited to start using them but am nervous to install!

Thanks in advance.

Paul

It is advisable to review all the new features of FH V7 because once you have upgraded there will be no going back to FH V6 as the GEDCOM and customisation settings are radically changed.

Some customisations may not be fully operational in FH V7 and will need fixing.

Plugins from FH V6 will not run in FH V7 without some adjustments.

There is a growing wealth of advice in the new FHUG Knowledge Base.

Your customisations don't need to "move" because V7 installs over the top of V6.  So most of your customisations will be retained.  There are a few exceptions, notably customisations to the Property Box, where you are advised to study the new features before deciding whether to restore to previous settings, keep the new defaults, or customise the new styles.  When you first open V7 you will be shown a page from the Help file titled "Notes on Upgrading to Version 7" which explains this and some other important points.  Read that carefully and you will be OK.

Hi Mike,

I bought FH6 from S&N Genealogy Supplies back in May.  I am supposed to get the free upgrade

to FH7.  I downloaded the upgrade from FH6 and now it is asking for an activation code.  I spoke

with the technical team at S&N and they told me that they are still waiting for the codes from

Family Historian and they will send it to me as soon as they receive it.  But, now I cannot use

FH because I cannot access it without the code.  Can I uninstall FH7 so I can use the software until

I get my activation code?  Thanks!

I’m not sure how far through the installation process you have got and how much FH V7 may have changed.

FH V7 radically changes the Project GEDCOM and customisations.

If you have backups of your Projects and all your customisations (you did use the Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings plugin I hope) then you may be able to revert to FH V6 and restore the backups.

Otherwise, you will just have to be patient.

Having installed version 7 and the compatible ancestral sources app I find that the census flags do not show for new census records. Could someone please advise how this can be achieved from within FH
Thanks

Hi Robert,

Yes, AS v7.0 has removed the Census Flags feature as discussed in the FHUG Forum for Ancestral Sources earlier in the year.

See https://ancestral.fhug.org.uk/webhelp/hh_start.htm#html/hs10.htm under Flag Support.

Do you use those Record Flags to trigger Diagram Box Icons for Census events?

If not then how do you use them?

Most users have moved on to using Diagram Box Condition Expressions instead of Record Flags.

The main advantage is that once created they automatically trigger Icons as soon as a Census event is added by whatever method and no Record Flags are needed.

See FHUG Knowledge Base article on Using Icons:

https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/using-icons/

There are two Worked Examples for INDI.CENS events for a chosen year.

e.g. %INDI.CENS[year=1901]% could be used to trigger your 1901 Census Icon.

I think I'm right in saying With AS7 the Census Flags are no longer available when creating Census records.

Nick Walker (author of Ancestral Sources) has removed support for creating and maintaining Flags because, as he said, "In early versions of Family Historian, Flags were the only way to have icons appear on diagrams. But since 2010 it has been more effective to use expressions to achieve this. The changes to the way that census templates work would have meant substantial work on the flag support..."

If you still wish to add the flags in FH, this can be done in either the Records window or the All tab of the individual's Property box. In either of those places right-click on the individual's name and choose Set Flag.  You can then choose from a list of your existing flags or create a new one.

Paul - forgive me - could you explain what AS 5.2.0 is?  I'm new to this.  Thx

Lorna Craig

It stands for 'Ancestral Sources version 5.2.0' (which has now been superseded by version 7).   Ancestral Sources is a program written by an FH user, Nick Walker, which is an aid to data entry in Family Historian.  It is free (but the author accepts donations!) and details can be found in the FHUG Knowledge Base here: https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/ancestral-sources/

Hi Kathy,

AS stands for Ancestral Sources which is a free companion program for Family Historian (FH).

Until this week its latest version was 5.2.0 but it is now version 7.0.0

See https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/ancestral-sources/ for details.

Just been looking at what plugins I have in 6 and whether they have been updated for 7. Generally I can find the info.

However, I have 'Export Gedcom File 3.9' - this just isn't showing up at all in the plugin store when I search for it. But it's the one most important to me! Please could you advise?

Thanks,
Teresa

Hi Kathy,

Sorry, AS = Ancestral Sources. An excellent accompanying program written by Nick Walker, that allows you to do 'data entry' of certificates and census information. He offers it for free with requests for voluntary donations, which I have done due to how much I use it.

Up until recently we were on version 5.2.0. We now have a version 7. Presumably the versioning number is to match Family Historian 7.

Paul

That will happen from time to time with any Plugins and always did in the old Plugin Store as is happening now in the new Plugin Store when they are being approved by Calico Pie for publishing.

I have this afternoon submitted the Export Gedcom File plugin for approval.

It should be approved at the latest sometime tomorrow I expect.

This will continue to happen for each Plugin that is updated for use with FH V7, and if an unexpected problem is discovered with a Plugin associated with new features then it will happen again.

Just be patient when Plugins go missing and they should return soon.

All the plugin authors are working hard to cope the changes.
