Media dates

Graham,

If you have used AS  'Method 1' (one source per census household)  the images will be linked to the Source records created by AS, not directly to the census facts.  So for consistency when you go through your 'old' census facts it would be best to link the images to Sources rather than each individual's census fact.  This means that the image for the census household is linked just once, to the Source record, rather than separately to each person's census fact.   If you originally created the old census facts without any Source records it might be worth using AS to re-enter those censuses from scratch.

Hi Lorna,

Oh! You're absolutely correct in terms of how I'm linking all photos to an individual. Although I've used FH for some time I've never really got into putting in individual facts. I do use AS for putting in census data so I assume the images go to the correct  place. I'll enter some facts for photos I've entered and change the links.

I must get the book out and read about in-putting photos to facts.

I've just checked and certainly some census facts, prior to using AS, don't have any media attached so I now have to go through and link to existing media and then remove any links to individuals.

Thanks so much for putting me on to the correct path.

Hi Graham,

It sounds as if you are linking all the photos to an individual, and viewing them in the Media tab of the Individual's Property Box.  Pictures linked in that way are intended to be pictures of the individual himself/herself, hence their age is shown as at the date of the picture.  It is more usual to link other types of image to facts or source records.  For example a picture of a house might be linked to a residence fact because it illustrates the fact.  An image of a birth certificate would normally be liked to a Source record which in turn is cited as evidence for the birth fact.

Media (pictures and other images) linked to facts can be seen by selecting a fact in the Facts tab of the Property Box and clicking the Show Media icon in the Facts tab toolbar.  Media linked to Sources can also be seen that way if you tick 'Include Citation Media' and 'Include Source Media' in the small Media window which opens.  Alternatively media linked to Sources can be seen in the Media tab of the Source record's Property Box.

Hi folks,

I'm sure someone has come across this problem before and I expect there is a simple answer - or am I being too simple?

I'm adding a large number of recently discovered photos into FH. However if I add a year date it links it to the person and gives that person's age - not appropriate if it is family dog or house!. If I don't give a date, which may not always be appropriate, under media in the property box it shows (No date) and then the caption I've used - assuming I've ticked' Use note as Caption'. If I don't tick that box it doesn't use the photo title either.

Is it possible to:

  • Stop (No date) appearing under a particular photo
  • Use the photo title as the caption without coping it into the note box?

Sorry if this is a silly question - my first post.

Thanks any help appreciated.

Graham
