Displaying workspace window(s) on a second monitor

Brian Darracott

Hello.  I'm using FH v6.2.7.  For a given project, if I have, say, two diagram workspace windows open, is there any way to move/display one of them on a second monitor?  I know that some of the pop-up boxes in FH can be "moved" to a second monitor (e.g. the "Note" entry box) but I'd very much like to be able to view two trees "full size" at the same time.  I know I can view them simultaneously in a reduced size on the one screen by using either the Window/tile facilities or otherwise just resizing manually, but they're then very small.
Many thanks.

Hi Brian. By plugging a monitor into your laptop, for example, you can use the second screen space by using one of the Function keys - on my current machine it is F8. Just open two trees as you have before, and use the mouse to move one of them to the second screen. That is, the only additional things to what you have done before are to (a) connect the second screen to your computer, and (2) Use the inbuilt Function key to make it available to your computer (in a seamless way).

Brian,

Unfortunately the Diagram window is not a floating window (unlike the Note window) so it can't be moved outside the frame of the FH program.   However it is possible to open two instances of FH and display them on different monitors to achieve what you want that way.  But you need to be VERY careful only to make any changes to the data in ONE of the instances of FH.  To see the changes reflected in the other you will then need to close and re-open the other instance of FH so that the revised data is loaded.

This may be a dumb question, but is it possible to make the FH main window very wide and span the two monitors?

If you open two instances of FH and update the data in one, then the other will popup a message saying another application has changed the data and do you want to reload. You do not have to close and re-open FH.
It is exactly the same as when AS is used in tandem with FH.

Another option is to use Save Diagram As > PDF File and open the PDF files on different monitors.

Mike, Yes it is possible!  (Not a dumb question, I feel dumb not to have thought of it.) Then, rather than use the Window>Tile option it's better to use the 'Restore Down' button on each diagram window so that they can be moved independently. Otherwise differences in physical size of the two monitors may make it difficult to display exactly one diagram on each monitor and in a comparable size.

Thanks everyone for your comments.  Opening two versions of FH achieves what I want - one displayed on each of the monitors.  I note the caveats, Mike, and made a small test change to one, but there was no pop-up on the other.  But I don't intend to make edits to my project when the two versions are open (famous last words, maybe!).  My need is to be able to view and study two trees that are not yet genealogically linked, to explore options and ideas.

Actually, I hadn't realised one could have two instances of the program open at once with both accessing the same project.  I don't now know why I thought that.

I had tried the two pdf diagrams route but these are not as easily moved around on screen as I find with "live" within FH, and also I'd have to keep making the pdfs each time I displayed a different ancestor tree, for example.

Thank you all.

Just to be clear, simply making a change is not enough. You must actually Save it or wait for Auto-Save.

It is not until the GEDCOM file is changed that the other instance of FH will notice the change.

As I said. It is like using AS where it is not until the Save in AS that FH notices the GEDCOM change.

However, do try the dual monitor Extend mode that spreads the desktop across both monitors.

if you have two instances FH open, Will the autosave function work on both or Just one version.? can someone maybe write a file/Plugin that will put a watermark on one instances, or would that be to hard? Just something simple "like do not edit..."

Trevor Rix

If you Google "screen watermark" you will see lots of suggestions on how to do that.

Mike Tate

Yes, Auto-Save will be enabled in both instances of FH.

But theoretically, Auto-Save should only be invoked if you make changes.

To be totally safe, make a Project Copy via the Project Window and open different copies in each FH instance.

The copy can have the words COPY DO NOT EDIT in its Project name so that is the ‘watermark’.

Plugins cannot create a ‘watermark’ anything like what you asked for.
