I have now actually decided to use just Historian on my Laptop to store everything and back up a copy So once I have made various updates, I delete my Tree on Ancestry and upload the new gedcom file, then the site refreshes and I can then check any new hints found As you know FindMyPast, MyHeritage are already linked to Historian so they will automatically look for new hints when I add a new person. This works very well for me.

Hi Neill, FH only offers the embed option to be compatible with the GEDCOM 5.5 specification. Nowadays, no products use that feature and always have media files separate from the GEDCOM file.
Online trees such as at Ancestry, FindMyPast, MyHeritage, ZoomPast, etc, do not allow bulk uploading or downloading of files linked to a GEDCOM file. There are workarounds in some cases as explained in the FHUG Knowledge Base.

You will discover that each product has its own interpretation of GEDCOM with its own variants. The above guides explain how to cope with those variations. The core features of GEDCOM are usually OK but some details leave something to be desired.

While you are on Do you know why FH software gives the option to embed photos/documents in to a Gedcom file for export but online sites will not accept the imported file They appear to only accept Gedcom file where the photo/documents are links. Also I cannot see any Photo’s after the Gedcom file has been uploaded using the link option Any help would be greatly appreciated

To create a custom attribute simply use the Tools>Fact Types and create a new attribute as shown in the image below. |

If you are not concerned with others propagating them in online trees then the simplest method is to just keep adding parents in the usual way. There is nothing in FH (or GEDCOM) that prevents an Individual from having as many parents as you like. In the same way as an Individual can have as many spouses/partners as you like.
The multiple parent scenario is necessary to cater for adoption and fostering, but also allows for alternative ancestors. Just make sure you add Notes or Citations to make it clear the parents are only prospective and need more research.

Hi,
You may have come across this problem before. I have several viable alternative ancestors, splits where i could go in one or more directions to continue my family tree. Is there a way to record these on FH6, or has anyone any suggestions how I could go about it? Many thanks, JohnL |
