Kristeen, have you found a better method of linking a census image to all of the individuals in the census household? So that census image thumbnails show in the Property Box > Media tabs for the all of those individuals? Then select an image and clich the green Play button to display the image full screen?

Thanks Mike, Lorna put me in the right direction somehow I unticked the
"include source record media".

Thanks for your help. Kristeen

Hi Kristeen,
I think you have overlooked that source Media such as Census images are not
attached directly to the Individual records, as that would have to be
repeated for everyone in the Census.
Instead, they are attached once to the Source record Media tab.

To find those Media, first select the Census fact on the Facts tab.
Then there are various ways to see the Source record Media.

Use either of the Show Media buttons in the Facts tab or the yellow Source
Citation pane.
Ensure that the include Source Record Media option is enabled.

Alternatively, click the blue arrow Go To Source Record button and open its
Media tab.

Ancestral Sources method 2 links the Media image to the Census Event or its Citation depending on the AS Options.

That can be viewed by selecting the Census Event and the Show Media button as described in the earlier replies.

Trevor will correct me if I’m wrong but he has a particular desire to also add the Media the Individual Media tab.

That is slightly unconventional and not usually a recommended technique.

Kristeen, you have the same issue that I have when adding census via Ancestral Sources method 2. The media image is not linked to each of the individuals in the household. Use this routine to enable census thumbnails to show in the Property Box media tab for each of those individuals.

  • when FH has refreshed go to Media > View All Media
  • click Updated to bring the most recent images to the top of the list
  • select the media record that you are working on
  • double click the image thumbnail
  • Links tab
  • ***double click the first person
  • Media tab in the Property box
  • Add media
  • Link To Existing Media Record
  • double click the first person (assuming that the list shows the most recent used at the top)
  • OK
  • tick the Exclude from Diagrams and Reports boxes
  • OK
  • [***repeat by clicking the next person in the Links tab, etc until finished]

This routine looks cumbersome but is quite quick when you get used to it.

Yay!! What a life saver you are Lorna.  Somehow I must have unticked “Include Source Record Media”.  One click and they all popped back.

Now going to check if that applied to all the individuals . . . Double yay!!

Thanks so much. Kristeen

Hi Kristeen,

When you use AS to record census details it attaches the image to the source record for the census (or to the citation, if you use ‘method 2’).  If you select an individual’s census fact and click the Show Media icon below the facts list this will open the Media for Fact dialogue.  Make sue that you have ticked both ‘Include Citation Media’ and ‘Include Source Media’ in that dialogue.  The census image should then show up.

Alternatively, select the fact and open the Sources pane attached to the Property Box. You should find the source listed there.  Click on the blue ‘Go to Source’ button to go to the Source Property Box.  The image will be seen on the Media tab of that box.

It is possible to attach media directly to a fact, but when the media is an image of a source document it is more usual to attach it to the source record.

Hi, can you point me in the right direction.

I have used AS for several years and always had the image attached to the Census individuals and placed in the Media Folder.  (I did nothing to make this happen other than entering the details into AS outside of FH).

I’ve had a while not working on the Family Tree and then recommenced in ernest the beginning of this month.  Yesterday I was looking at the Fact details of a family I’d entered a few days ago and noticed there was no media attached.  If I use FH to enter the media there’s no problems.  If I re-enter using AS, I get duplicates in the Media folder but still no media to be seen on the Fact Tab.

What I do is save the census image in a file under the appropriate year. I title the image according to the census page.

When I am in AS I open it and when it is opened in the cencus page I browse the file where the image is kept in my folder (e.g 1891 census) I add this image to AS then list all in the household

Then I save it. Only one image for all the names listed

Should read
  • double click the first media record (assuming that the list shows the most recent used at the top)
