duplicate names

Hello,
i am new here, i have a question, is it possible that there is a duplication check when your insert a new entry ? now i every time have to check the name if i don't have it... thanks already for the information. |

Welcome. No there is no duplicate Name check, but it is very easy to check in the Records Window Filter. There is also the ‘Find Duplicate Individuals’ plugin. The point is that some Names are quite common so duplicates are likely. Conversely, the same Individual may be in the public records with variants of their Name. The most common cause of that is for married women but there are many others. So a simple duplicate Name check may be misleading and a deeper investigation is necessary. Regards, Mike Tate |

in my peditree all woman are with there born name. a name check with date of birth would be nice to have, that it give a sign when this happen. regards, Jan |

Hi Jan, In FH also, the convention is to record birth names for everyone. The snag with a DoB check is there is no guarantee that the new DoB will be the same as the existing DoB. That is why we prefer a Find Duplicate Individuals plugin that checks for close matches on Names, BMD Dates, Parents, Children, etc. Regards, Mike Tate

You can also check record list of individuals. When you type a surname listing the individuals and the list appears click the top bar and this will put all the names in alphabetical order Check those names with same year of birth (and spouse name) and if you see two similar ones confirm they are the same then use edit merge Victor On 21/09/2020 11:20 pm, Mike Tate
