Batch-delete Witness

Jorge Planas Campos

When transferring from TMG to FH I have found that in many events there are witnesses than turn up in the reports. Is there a way to batch delete witnesses? Perhaps a way to delete the small diagram next to the facts that have witnesses?

I have used the "search & replace" pluging to delete, for example, "bride" as a witness (in her own marriage), but that leaves a witness with no role in the Fact Tag. Any ideas? My project has over 500 individuals and it would be very tiresome to delete all useless witnesses.

Thank you.

Jorge

As you have found, Search and Replace only searches or replaces but does not delete anything.

I have written a quick Fact Query that filters by Role and lists Fact Witnesses.

See attached Fact Witness by Role.fhq file.

In the Result Set, select all the Witness column names and hit the Delete key or use Edit > Delete command.

OK the warning message, and if more Witness names are listed repeat the Delete.

Great, it works beautifully! I previously used Search and Replace only with “bride” in search and an empty “replace” and it deleted all of them, but left the name of the individual in the witness “box” without a role: not a clean procedure but it did the job, avoiding messing up the report. But of course your solution is better. Thanks for your help.

Sorry again. So to end the story, how can I delete those witnesses with no role that I have left behind? I have found that they still mess up the report and I cannot locate them with the query you sent me because it requires a role, and an empty space is not valid as such.

I am glad that worked for you.

What you did with Search and Replace and Bride was to empty the Role field of the Fact Witness.

But those Fact Witnesses were still linked to the Marriage event, so did not really do the job.

They still need deleting, but are more difficult to find now.

I think the easiest solution is to revert back to the GEDCOM you had before using Search and Replace.

That will only work if you have changed no other data recently except for the Fact Witnesses and their Roles.

Use File > Backup/Restore > Revert to Snapshot and choose the Snapshot Taken today or if that does not work choose the one taken yesterday.

That will undo all the database changes you have made recently. Will that be OK?

Then you can use my Query to remove all the Fact Witnesses you don’t want.

Done. I was able to get rid of all the witnesses that were confusing the issue. Thanks!
