Removing non-working media files imported with FindMyPast gedcom

Hello, I am new to Family Historian and am trying it out on a 30-day trial so please couch any replies in easy terms! First impressions are very positive and I like the way you can see much more info at one time than in FMP. However, when I look in the Media window I have a list (of about 50) media records listed as Other Media (COM{0}RECORD?ID (or TRANSCRIPT?ID) and then more letters and numbers. I assume these were links to media within FMP (perhaps made early on my use of it as later I deliberately downloaded or printed copies as pdfs of census returns etc to save their use being tied to a continuing subscription to FMP).
My question is whether there is any easy way to delete these records within Family Historian (they are all linked to Individuals rather than anything else) or whether I would do better to go back to FindMyPast and somehow delete the media links there (assuming I can find where they are hidden as I don't remember adding them myself) and then reimport a new (and hopefully 'cleaner') gedcom. I'd obviously prefer to do this as soon as possible so that I can start making changes in the Family Historian file. Hope all this makes sense. |

Hi Karin, Online products like Ancestry and FMP include Media records in their exported GEDCOM but do not supply any associated media files. That is partially to protect the commercially sensitive nature of media images only available by subscription.
It is easy to delete all those Media records and is probably better to start again by adding new Media. See the FHUG Knowledge Base ~ Family Historian ~ Delete Any Number of Records for advice: https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:delete_a_large_number_of_records
BTW: It is better to download Census and other Media as image files rather than PDF, because they display in FH Reports, etc.
Talking about a ‘cleaner’ GEDCOM, it is typical that a GEDCOM from another product such as FMP will contain ‘data’ not recognised by FH. You probably got an Exception Report Log when you imported the GEDCOM file that lists such anomalies. See the FHUG Knowledge Base ~ Importing to Family Historian for advice: https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:index#importing_to_family_historian There is no specific advice for importing from FMP, but the generic advice mostly applies.
BTW: Did you just open the GEDCOM file, or use File > Project Window > New Project > Import a GEDCOM file as a Project, which is recommended?
BTW: The FH 30-day-free-trial supports ALL features except Plugins.

Many thanks for your reply. With a bit more experimentation I discovered that by clicking on each of the media records in the list in turn with the link tag open in the details box that opened I could discover which individuals had linked media files and then go to each of those individuals and click on their media tab then delete the link and the media file (just unlinking did not have the desired effect). This has cut my meda records list down to 6 records which do not appear to be linked to an individual and which I cannot work out how to delete (it's not the end of the world if they stay but being the kind of person I am I'd like to start with a clean slate). I did have another look at the deleting any number of records link you sent (I had managed to find that before), but I am afraid I still can't really understand the bit about creating and then deleting a named list. On the whole my gedcom file imported fairly well though I do have a list of uncategorised data (something to investigate another day I think!). And I did open a project rather than just import a gedcom file. I've no doubt I will eventually get my head round what's what - I am probably making life much more difficult for myself by importing information from elsewhere rather than starting from scratch, but I will persevere as I think in the end it will be worthwhile becaue of the things I can do in Family Historian which seemed to be impossible in FMP (e.g. search on everyone who came from the same town or had the same occupation or plotting movements through time on a map). This is how to use a Named List to delete records.
To open the Records Window and Named Lists panes use the View > Named Lists > Bookmarks menu command. In the left-hand Records Window pane open the Media tab and select all the records by holding down Shft key as you click first and last entry. Now use Lists > Add to Selected Named List or click the green arrow at righthand of toolbar to add those Media records to the Bookmarks list. Now use Lists > Delete Named List Records and accept the CAUTION. If you change your mind you can use the Edit > Undo command.
