Download Family Diagram

Hi. I'm new to this group but have been using FH for a numbers of years, so forgive me if this a well worn topic!

I'm creating a family website in wix.com with stories about various individuals. It's only available to family members on-line. Appended to my tree are basic tree charts created in Excel.

Is there a way that I can save my FH 'Relatives Diagram' chart to my computer and hence as a link to my website, perhaps as a pdf(?), so that family members can click a link and see the whole ancestral picture?

NB I'm not a techie so not too technical please!

Take care.

Assuming you have Family Historian 6, why not just display your diagram in FH and select Diagram>Save as PDF to create a pdf,  then upload it to WIX assuming that site allows you to upload PDFs.

I’m no expert but it took me a long time to try to do this in another scenario. I eventually gave up as it was just too complex. You also have problems when your pc is off-line and there are additional problems of guaranteeing the security of your pc.

I don’t know wix, but assuming it is like other semi-automated website builders you could produce the charts you want from FH on your pc, upload those to wix and hyperlink there. It should be much easier as everything will be on the one server. Probably jpg’s would be better as pdf’s sometimes need a special viewer for them to display.

Hi Jane

As I said, I'm not techie and confess I don't understand what you're saying! I've tried all apparent options to save the diagram, with it opened and closed, but see nothing obvious. Even if I go into 'Export' none of the options there give me a list of items to select to export.

Guess I'll stick with the long winded process of drawing my charts up in Excel.

Thanks anyway.

Hi Robin

Thanks for your reply. It really is frustrating. I think FH is great but, in my opinion, when you get to something basic like this it does let its self down.

I'll soldier on!

I'll try again.

Do you have a diagram displayed on the screen?  This is a diagram and not the tabs of the focus window.
So click on the diagram icon on the icon bar at the top of the program,
Once done select Diagram>Save As>PDF from the menu at the top.

Jane. Your patience is admirable. But I still don't get! I'll await freedom and get my son to help me face to face. He has the patience of a saint. Thanks anyway.

Take care.

Tony, you first need to open a Diagram Window to display whatever family tree chart you want to save.

Do that by clicking one of the four tree icons in the top toolbar to the right of the camera Media icon.

Then use the Diagram > Save Diagram As > PDF File (.pdf) command as shown below and accept the dialogue defaults.

Eventually, that will save a PDF file in your project’s Public folder.

Hi Mike

Thanks for your tip. Unfortunately, when I click on PDF File I get "PDF file output not enabled" and I can't seem to get around that with my Canon printer/scanner. So, I've created a jpg file and then converted that to a PDF, which apears to work. On my computer anyway.

I'll now have to see if the image is usable for people who view my website. Fingers crossed!.

Take care.

Hi Tony,

That problem with PDF file output not enabled crops up quite regularly due to the Family Historian PDF printer driver getting upset by Windows.

It is often fixed by reinstalling the latest free V6.2.7 of FH over the existing installation (assuming you are running FH V6).

Alternatively, follow the FHUG Knowledge Base advice for Save As PDF File Output is Not Enabled:

https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:family_historian_installation_problems#save_as_pdf_file_output_is_not_enabled

That will fix the problem and produce a better quality diagram than JPG.

Regards, Mike Tate

Thanks agian.
