It rather depends on what media format you choose to use for those church records.

If they are a separate JPG image for each frame of the microfilm, then create a separate Media record & image for each JPG file.

Multiple Media records can be linked to one Source record so that all frames get displayed and included in Reports, etc.

If the microfilm frames are all held into a single PDF document with multiple pages, then that needs one Media record & PDF file.

That can be linked to a Source record and opened via a PDF Viewer such as Adobe Acrobat, but cannot be included in Reports.

Other media configurations are possible, and it is usually easy to convert from one to the other.

Mike, I was presuming Ray had several images (pages if you like) of a document that linked to a single fact. Without converting them into a single multipage image they would only be viewed one at a time. I had exactly the same issue with a war diary which I initially scanned into individual images (1 for each page). I had linked all these to a single fact (Enlistment). I later linked them all again to the Discharge fact. A long winded process for 20 images but now with a single multipage image the process is much more streamlined and to me at least make for a much easier experience when I read the document. Hi Mike

Thanks for the reply, that clears up my missunderstanding of the process at work. It is a pity that multiple image records cannot be processed, when I download an image of a church record like to include the Folio cover which is usually one of the first frames on the microfilm. I can never find where the previous one is, hence all the downloads, I Shall just have to adopt a more disciplined approach.

Thanks a lot

Ray

Hi Ray,

There are various ways of interpreting your problem.

I suspect you have multiple Media Records that link to duplicate or equivalent Media Files.

Unless you have a very large number of cases it is not worth the effort of writing a Plugin to automate the whole process as it will only get used once.

The Check for Possible Duplicate Media Plugin will list Media Records in pairs where they link to equivalent Media Files.

The Media Files can have the same or different filenames. It is just the file content that is checked.

You can then manually select each pair of listed Media Records and use the Edit > Merge/Compare Records command.

That allows you to select whatever combination of details from either record you need to preserve.

Afterwards, run the Check for Unlinked Media Plugin to clean up the Media Files that are no longer linked to your Project.
