Rotating Photos

I appreciate this has been mentioned before and there is an article in the Knowledge Base but I couldn’t follow what was going on.

My problem is that since upgrading to V6.2 any photos (scans of old hard copy pictures) I add to FH are rotated through 90° and I can’t find any way of preventing this. EXIF data has been mentioned in the past but I don’t know how to go about finding/editing this data.

Can anybody help please?

Hi Barrie,

I don’t think upgrading to FH V6.2 has any impact on this problem.

It is simply that those recent scans have EXIF data that affect rotation.

One solution is to reverse rotate the original pictures 90° when scanning.

As you say there is FHUG Knowledge Base advice on Photo Orientation at

https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:v4:adding_multimedia#photo_orientation

It gives instructions on how to remove the EXIF data to correct the orientation.

Which of the alternative methods have you attempted and what difficulties did you encounter?

e.g.

Windows 10 has Windows Live Photo Gallery in which you can open your scanned image before adding to FH.

Click the Rotate left or Rotate right option in the toolbar and save, so the image appears correctly in FH.

You may have to experiment as to whether to rotate left or right gives the desired effect.

There is an article on this in the FHUG knowledge base. Just search on photo orientation and you’ll find a whole section in the article that should come up. For a bulk change, looks like you have to use an outside app like irfan viewers
