Migration to new PC

David Gynes

Following the instructions on the Knowledge base (Thank you all who put up the useful information, how tos and tips) I got to the stage of “Ensure all file links…..if C or any crosses are present ….stop and ask for help in the Forums. I have both so I’m asking for help.

Replies please in the simplest language possible - I came late to computers - and am now late in life so I get easily bamboozled with talk of Registry and the like.

Thanks in anticipation.

David,

You have not posted your question in the FHUG Forum so I will try and help you here.

I will have to start with a few enquiries to identify the scope of the problem.

What Family Historian Version are you using? Is it version 6.2.7?

If not sure, use Help > About Family Historian and it says at the top.

Is your family tree data structured as a Project?

If not sure, is its Project Name listed in the File > Project Window?

How many External File Links are listed on the C: drive, and how many have X marks?

I am trying to determine if it is a major problem or just a handful of images that are affected.

Do you understand the difference between image files stored within the Project in its Media folder and image files stored externally?

When you add Media do you opt to Copy the file into the Project Media folder or not?

Are you comfortable with using Windows File Explorer to move files from folder to folder?

I am trying to determine how much detail I must provide with the instructions to rectify the problems.

Please try and answer all the questions otherwise the solution will take longer than necessary

Regards, Mike Tate

Sorry Mike,

a supplementary question I should have put in my last reply to you -

Would it achieve my object if I simply copied all my projects on to a memory stick and loaded the new PC from that? FH is already loaded and waiting there.

Mike, Thank you for your two replies to my enquiry. Not from lack of interest have I not reposted - as chairman of Dorset Family History Society I have been a little preoccupied with our biennial Family History Day (Open Day) coming up in a fortnight and the 'will/he won’t he' ban big events and or close the school we use question

It was on my list for this evening so here goes:

 Is it version 6.2.7?        Yes

Project?  Yes

How many External File Links are listed on the C:  11

how many have X marks?  10  I have attached a screen shot below which may enlarge enough for you to see what you need to know - I hope!

Do you understand the difference between image files stored within the Project in its Media folder and image files stored externally?     Not really - but……...

When you add Media do you opt to Copy the file into the Project Media folder     Yes, in that I always accept the default offered by FH

Are you comfortable with using Windows File Explorer to move files from folder to folder?    I haven’t used a windows computer in 12 years- so no, not really.  I had FH on a virtual machine on my Mac and got so fed up with Parallels and the problems it causes that I bought a new windows laptop specifically for my FH, hence the need to migrate.  I guess the system is similar to the Mac, once I find out where the programmes/apps are.  I’m comfortable with doing it on my Mac.

I am happy to move this discussion over to the proper Forum if you prefer.  I am very grateful for your offer to help me.  I read a lot of the “problems” that come from FH users and most times it is one Mike Tate who puts them right so I stand in admiration for your knowledge and public spirit.

Best wishes

David

No, the transfer mechanism does not matter, and a memory stick is one of the best methods.
The problem is that those C: drive and X media won't make it onto the memory stick.

David, the problem is not too bad.

There are actually only three missing files marked X and one existing file on the C: drive.

The three missing files are all Welcome and Blessing.doc that were once in the FH Project Backup ZIP file created 30-9-2014.

Do you know why you have three Media records with File links to those external files?

If you select each one in turn and click the Go To button on the right, it will show the Media record in the Media Window.

If the Links column is 0 then it is not being used so could be deleted.

Otherwise, you need to investigate the purpose of those three and whether you have a Welcome and Blessing.doc file elsewhere.

The one C: drive file is Edmund G bur Stanway 1702-3.tiff which is in the Media folder of what was a Project named Masterfile 06-16.

If you can move (not copy) that file into the Media folder of your current Project then the Auto Repair Links button should fix that problem and it will be listed in with the Project Data Folder – Media files.

Please let me know how you get on with resolving those 4 problem files.

Once fixed you can continue with the other migration steps.

Sorry I asked about Windows File Explorer but you omitted to mention you were migrating from Parallels on a Mac, which is rather unusual.

Regards, Mike Tate

Thank you Mike,

I shall try to get down to this this weekend.

Don’t apologise about File Explorer, I know I shall have to get to grips with it now I’m
going on to a windows machine.  I do not find the display that comes up when you go into F E at all helpful  - more confusing!  I’ll learn.

Thanks again

David.

Free Commander XE is much better than File Explorer in that it has two panes similar to the old Windows Explorer.

Not familiar with Commander XE, but a program that I have used for many years is xplorer2. There is a free Lite version as well as a Pro version.
