Hints from FMP not showing in the Web search window

John

I have had this problem several times a year since using Windows 7, 8.1 and now version 10 on a new PC. Although in most instances Mike has never had the problem at the same time as me I firmly believe that it always happens after a Windows update of some kind. Mine last happened about a week ago. I wish there was a way to permanently lock in the required ‘11’ whenever FH is loaded.

Kind regards

Robin Dew

Ooops. Sorry - I ran two sentences together in my reading of your mail.

You have slightly misquoted me.

The IE core shell almost certainly is still ‘supported’.

It is IE that I said is not ‘supported’ by which I meant the user interface built on top of the core shell.

The Edge browser is not even a component of Windows, and is planned to be shipped and updated as a separate product.

You are right that it is not being ‘developed’ or ‘supported’ which just means it is getting no new features or bug fixes

I would have thought that the core shell, being, as you say, a fundamental part of the Windows User Interface, would still be subject to bug fixes. Otherwise, that's a nice channel of attack for the black hats.

Whether the adoption of the Chrome engine in the Edge browser might affect the continued use of the IE core, I have no idea. I keep losing track of which bit the Chrome engine is an engine for! (And indeed, whether it's Chrome or Chromium!)

Pauline,

The FH internal Web Search Window is unaffected by the Chrome browser or any other browser except IE.

Note that the FH Web Search Window cannot access FMP record unless you sign in via FH or IE.

Signing in via Chrome does not work.

What have you tried to close the FH Web Search Window?

Left-click the X in the Navigation Bar icon on left.

Right-click that same icon and use Close Window.

Use Window > Close All Non-essential Windows.

I’m having the same problem. I’m not sure when it started because I’ve been on holiday. I’m also finding it very difficult to close the window. I wondered if it might be related to having FMP open in chrome at the same time, although that never used to make a difference.

Pauline,

The Internet Explorer core shell is fundamental to Windows File Explorer, the Windows Desktop, et al.

So without a major redesign IE cannot be ‘retired’ but you are right that it is not being ‘developed’ or ‘supported’ which just means it is getting no new features or bug fixes.

It is the same as Windows XP, Windows Vista, and now Windows 7 that are not supported, but it still continue to operate.

Mike, are Microsoft still supporting explorer? I seem to remember reading somewhere that it was coming to an end.

Hi Mike,
I had reset IE but not run the Plugin. After running the Write Reg Plugin, all is fine now. Many thanks for your help.

John,

Did you follow the advice I suggested in https://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=how_to:internet_data_matches especially regarding Internet Explorer and the Write Reg IE Shell Version Plugin that exactly matches your description and can sometimes happen after a Windows Update?

Hi Mike, thanks for the reply. I was only guessing at the cause of the problem, as on the 15th Jan, Microsoft downloaded a new version of Edge that is now based on the Chrome Browser. I just wondered if that had caused the problem.
It is weird as it has been working well for a very long time, but just recently it has stopped working and only shows a blank page. If I open in an external browser , that works fine......strange?

regards John

John, I am not seeing any problem.

The FH Web Search Window is not impacted by Microsoft Edge in any way.

It is only related to Internet Explorer.
