I don't think you will see the discount until after your existing subscription has expired. I seem to remember when I did it I had renewed with the discount within 15 minutes of my subscription expiring. Also, if you renew at the basic level you will get offers later to upgrade at a discount. I think this took a few weeks. Andrew Braid

I've been using the discount for at least the last 3years. As Trevor says, make sure you are logged in. Sue in Notts

Re: adding media to FH
Peter Evans
I too first copy media to a temporary folder. I use the "public" folder which is part of FH. This has the advantage that it is included in the back up of the project and the media remains for later use. Another reason to use a temporary folder is that I do not always enter the media into FH straight away but often, with say a census image, first search for other years or births/baptisms of any new children or spouses the census image revealed. Also I have images of many wills back as far as the 16th century that I cannot really use in my data until I have transcribed them. This is quite a task as much of the writing is difficult to decipher so it can get put off until later. Peter

Re: adding media to FH
Like you, I start by putting the image in the media folder of FH (actually I use sub-folders within the Media folder). I keep the Media folder open so that I can then add the media very quickly to FH using the drag and drop method. When you are adding the media to a whole record (Individual, Source, Place) you can simply drag and drop the media onto the Media tab of the record. There is no need to click “insert from file” and select the image.
The only point of saving the image to a temporary folder first would be if you use the temporary folder to collect images which you don’t want to add immediately to FH. This acts as a reminder that those images have not yet been linked to FH. But when you do add them to FH you can move them to the Media folder and use the drag and drop method.

Robert, I also add media to FH the same way you do. I have several media subfolders from the main media folder where I store the relevant image. I then do exactly the same as you do. Very easy and very simple. Bill Murphy

This is what I do Under the FH Projects folder I have a sub folder titled 'Family
details' Under this I have sub folders of all the surnames e.g., Smith, Brown etc other sub folder for certificates e.g. births, baptisms etc other sub folder for census with subfolders for each year and country I then add these to FH either using the image under each person or via AS Victor

Re: adding media to FH
Either method is perfectly valid and there is also Drag & Drop or Copy & Paste to copy images from such as online pages directly into a Media tab in FH.
There are also plugins to help manage Media files copied into the Media folder and overlooked.

Re: adding media to FH
Robert Often, my images are from those I've stored elsewhere anyway, such as pictures of people. I just let FH handle it all. When I add the media, I just let FH copy it over in it's default way. If it happens to be a file I've downloaded and don't want anywhere else, I might delete it from the original location. I have created some subfolders in the Media folder for the likes of Census images and I use Ancestral Sources for entering this data/attaching the image, and choose the relevant folder to put the image of the census/register etc. Best Wishes Neil.

adding media to FH
Robert Jordan
I have been using the following method to add media to FH
When I find an image I want to include I first save the image to the media subfolder of the FamilyHistory.fh_data folder within the project folder. I then go into FH and locate the record I wish to attach the image to and the fact or source, I then add image. click "insert from File" and then select the image. I have been told that the way to do this should be to save the image file to say a temporary folder first and then go into FH to add the image from the temporary folder. The image in the temporary folder is then to be deleted as it would have been copied into the media subfolder in FH and the duplicate is unnecessary. I would welcome Members views on these two methods Robert Jordan

Re: Gedcom
Hi Patricia, To achieve that extent of ‘pruning’ you need to copy the Project and use Split Tree Helper.
So in File > Project Window select Project and use More Tasks > Copy Project. Open the copy and use File > Split Tree Helper where you can delete local Notes bottom left and any Facts as well as anything else you want to be excluded. Finally, use the Export Gedcom File plugin for the target product you are migrating to.

I'm trying to export a Gedcom file with just the bare bones - Names and dates and places of birth. I've tried the FH export but it exports all the notes as well. Previously I used the Export Gedcom plugin and I'm fairly certain it worked ok for me. So, now I have FH 7 I've downloaded the latest version of the plugin and performed an export, but I'm still getting the notes exported. Does anyone know how I can avoid this? Patricia

Yes, the ‘Family Historian’ – Printing window will continue with a busy blue ring and (Not Responding) until you click OK in the ‘Family Historian PDF – Save PDF File As’ window.
After altering the Options > Print tab black-and-white setting did you click ‘Set as defaults…’ bottom left? If not then it will keep coming back with black-and-white enabled.
Strangely, that diagram and all other More Diagrams… have that black-and-white setting enabled by default. That is the opposite of the usual default for Diagrams and particularly odd since they are ‘colourful’ Diagrams.
I suggest you report that anomaly to Calico Pie via the ticket system: http://www.calico-pie.com/osticket/open.php

Re: Diagrams and PDF printing
michaellee508@...
Mike I went Diagrams >save Diagrams as>PDFfile
Save as PDF file>print using family Historian Nova Printer
Little box with Family Historian printing on the top comes up with the little ring circling showing that it is in action Then the window Family Historian PDF opens up with Save PDF file as I hit the save as and all seems to work but I had been waiting for the circle to stop and on a number of times previously it had said not responding.
In going through this exercise to write it down I find that the Diagram seems to revert to Black & White in the print tab of the Diagrams program. I am using v7 and going to the charts icon>More diagrams > All relatives flat generational colouring. For the chart.
I can get around it now it does not stop but thought it was not as it should be.
Many thanks for all your help
Michael

Michael, As I stated, there are several dialogues involved in printing with the Family Historian PDF (Nova printer). It would help us solve your issues quicker if you gave the names in the top left corner of the window for each dialogue (as I did). I don’t recognise your description of a ‘save page’ or where it will accept a ‘save as’.
