It would be a good idea to pop this question on the forum which you can access from the FH Help menu. There may already be a thread on there that will help you..

I have a technical issue I hope someone can advise on.

Yesterday, whilst using Family Historian, my laptop fell over with a memory issue. The subsequent scan of my laptop found no issues but, this morning, I have noticed two problems:

  1. I have lost all my source citations from the project. I have two other projects and they have not lost their source citations. To avoid panic, I am assuming that it is unlikely that I have lost the source citation data but that the link to them has been lost but, if so, how do I get them back?
  2. I have lost a percentage of my media files [links?]. It appears to be most of the most recently added [just over 3 weeks] but also some added earlier. The media is still on file but they have disappeared completely from Family Historian. They are not showing as broken links. The four media files I added before I noticed the problem are showing the full link [c://.../media/....] rather than the shortened link [media/...]for all the earlier files.
I take a Gedcom file only backup each time I exit Family Historian and still have the last 9. The oldest is from 26 April 2021. I would rather not restore back that far but, if that would cure the two problems, it would not be a disaster. However, I am unsure if that would fix the problems so am reluctant to do it without advice.

As my other two projects are OK, I cannot see that reinstalling Family Historian will help.

I am currently still using version 6 as I am in the middle of a huge tidy-up of my one-name study project. [I intend to upgrade as soon as I have finished.]

Many thanks for simply reading this. Any help you can give will be gratefully received.

Kind regards,

Sue

Good idea! Better to listen to someone who knows that they're talking about. :-)

Hope it works out.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had not  thought of doing that. The latest two backups are substantially smaller. Perhaps indicating that a restore to an older backup would cure the problems.

Sue,

I'd hold fire for a while before you do anything drastic. If your pc has a memory problem, it may just be that the citations and media are not being displayed properly and are really still there.

A simple check might be to look at the size of your last saved gedcom file and compare it to the size of the zipped file in your earlier backups. If the size is not substantially smaller, it may indicate a display problem.

Other users are much more experienced with this sort of stuff than I am, and they may well offer better help, but I advise waiting for a while until they can assist.

Hope it all turns out to be something simple and that no harm is done!

In my case I use ancestral sources so I’m auto entering baptism info then if need be I enter just the year (obviously could  be out) in the birth field.

Following Nev’s question on shifting Birth dates to Baptisms…

I’ve been similarly relaxed about storing Baptism dates as birth dates pre-1837 as whether you’re using Family Historian or one of the online systems, that’s the easiest way to get a “birth” date displaying on the screen.

What would be really helpful to know is how to set up FH so that if there is no Birth date stored for an individual but there is a Baptism date for them, diagrams (or reports for that matter) display a Baptism date where the Birth date would normally display, preferebly with the ability to put some text against it like an asterisk so that you can quickly see that it’s Baptism not Birth.

With this facility, at least in FH the temptation to be relaxed on this would go!

I assume that someone has solved this somewhere if someone could point me in the right direction pls!

Thanks

David

Ancestry Library edition allows you to email the records you find back to yourself - or it did a couple of years ago. At present a lot of libraries are allowing home access because of covid-19 but I don't know how long that will last. It's particularly useful if you have a British subscription but just need the odd foreign record!

When you go to the library take your lap top (if you have one) so you can download and save anything yomay want from Ancestry. You can't do that on the library computers.

It has been awhile since I did anything like this so the library rules may have changed. Come to think of it I used some libraries outside my area.

Thanks very much Mike

I have recently started using v7 and spent lots of time on a previous version which was definitely before 6.2.7 so I had no idea that the system had this feature.

I will give it a go and see how it works so may well be fine without further guidance.

Thanks for the help!

David,

What you request is already implemented in the FH v6.2.7 or later.

The default Diagram Text Scheme called Birth, Marr, Death does show the Baptism details if no Birth details, and similarly for Burial if no Death details.

However, if the Birth (or Death) event has a Place defined then that is displayed and the Baptism Date is inhibited.

With a little customisation, the Text Scheme can display whatever you want, including Christening and Cremation if required.

Reports usually include all facts, so all of Birth, Baptism, Christening, Death, Burial and Cremation will get reported.

The life dates usually shown in round brackets such as (1759-1835) will use Baptism/Christening or Burial/Cremation dates if Birth or Death dates are not available but with appropriate prefixes.

In the Focus Window, the best available dates are shown from Birth, Baptism, Christening, Death, Burial and Cremation.

Which of the above are you unfamiliar with and need further guidance?

Mike Tate
