Family HistorianV7 Hints

Colin_McCullough

Hi Folks
I am an avid user of FH
I am member of Find my Past itself as well
When a tip comes up in Family Historian hints is there a way Find my past can suggest a newspaper tip as well as BDM entries ????
This would be extremely helpful without having to log in and check their web site for same

Re: Star in front of Fact type in fact property box

I don’t know of an easy way to unset all those Fact Flags in bulk.

Thanks Mike. So simple.

They are easy to set/unset one by one. It appears that I set them all. Is there a way to unset preferred for all?

Star in front of Fact type in fact property box

I just noticed, probably been there forever but I just never noticed, that on some lines in the FACTS tab of the property box have a yellow star in front of the fact name.

Is this significant? FH does not seem to do trivial things do I was curious

There is an updated Language Pack to download and further advice in the FHUG Forum posting:

‘Language Pack can alter English Report labels’

Re: Mapping errors / place name editing with search and replace plugin

Christer & Teresa,

I have produced the two Plugins that I promised.

They are attached to FHUG Forum posting ‘Plugins to manage Place Text and Standardized’ as it is preferred that they are not attached to these Emails.

https://www.fhug.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=19844

Please give them a try, perhaps on a copy of your Project.

However, you can also use Edit > Undo Plugin Updates or File > Backup/Restore > Revert to Snapshot to reverse any changes

Copy Chosen Place Names to Standardized v0.1

This allows you to select any Place records before running the plugin or it will prompt for Place records after it is run.

It copies the Place name Text field to the Standardized field as long as Standardized is not already in use.

If necessary you must delete any used Standardized field values beforehand via a Query.

Search and Replace v3.4.1

The Extra Filters tab, for Record Names/Titles lower right, allows Place Name (_PLAC.TEXT) and Standardized (_PLAC.STAN) to be selected separately.

Set the Major Options tab, Search Scope to Place Records (_PLAC) and Select Records subset as required.

You then have three Extra Filters tab options to filter changes:

1) Place Name only; 2) Standardized only; 3) All the Record types (which enables both);

That 3rd option only enables the Place Name and Standardized fields because the Search Scope is only Place Records.

Thanks for experimenting.  I haven't plucked up courage to upgrade yet but your solution has worked well for both of my scenarios in v 6 and my updated printed sheets now display how I want them too.

Liz, a quick experiment seems to confirm that the FH v7.0 Language Pack feature can conditionally translate labels in Reports such as ‘Spouse’ into ‘Partner’.

That applies not only to heading labels on the left but also in the photo captions.

Yes, once you are happy that the OneDrive version is working to your satisfaction then you can delete the ‘This PC’ copy.

Just check one setting. Right-click the OneDrive cloud icon in the Navigation bar bottom right and choose Settings.

In the ‘Microsoft OneDrive’ dialogue open the ‘Settings’ tab and ensure that ‘Files On-Demand’ at the bottom is NOT ticked.

Otherwise, if you have no Internet connection you may have no FH Project files on your PC.

That’s really useful thanks Mike, i will give that a try with a rather ‘awkward’ ancestor (one husband, no children, 3 partners and lots!). Especially as all 4 men are currently shown as spouse meaning one ‘marriage’ was bigamous.

Regarding the word Spouse in the caption under the photo, that can be altered.

In your grandmother’s Property Box open the Media tab and Edit the Media photo.

In the unlabelled note box at the bottom, enter exactly the text you want in the caption.

e.g. Jane SMITH, 1900, age 50

Then tick the ‘Use Note as Caption’ option on the right.

You may also wish to make a similar change for your grandfather in case his photo appears in reports as a Spouse.

The word Spouse cannot be altered in FH v6.2.7 in the Individual Summary Report.

It might be possible in FH v7.0 by using its new Language Translation features.

The only option is to use Save Report As and edit the PDF or Word-processor version externally.

Mike

I have a green Tick by my desired Project in the project Window and it is shown in the Tool>Preferences>Startup>Default Startup file.

I have decided to use the first option you suggested in your previous e-mail ie Keep my projects permanently on One Drive >Documents>familyHistorian projects folder.

It seems much simpler than the other alternative and at my age I am all for simplicity.

Am I correct in saying that all I need to do now is delete the copy that is stored on This PC in Windows File Explorer and the project will then be held on my computer and on the cloud via One Drive.

My thanks for your patience in navigating me through this situation.

Michael,

I assume the shortcut is the one created at installation and will simply run FH with whatever settings you choose.

The File > Project Window list of Projects is chosen by the Location setting in that window.

The default Project that is opened needs one of those listed Projects to be selected and shown with a green tick.

i.e. Select your desired Project, probablyMichael & Barbara family’, then use More Tasks… > Set as Default Project.

That project’s GEDCOM file will also be specified in Tools > Preferences > Startup > Default Startup File.

You can delete any individual Project by using More Tasks… > Delete Project…

But that won’t delete the Family Historian Projects folder itself, which must be done using Windows File Explorer.

Unmarried Status

liz_graydon

My father's parents never married and I have set the marriage status as "Never Married".  Unfortunately when I print a 3 generation Descendants chart it puts the word spouse under the photo that I have linked and it displays on the right of the report.  Also when I run an individual summary report for me grandmother it shows her as being married to the father of my father, which he isn't.  It does not show on the report that they never married.  I don't want the words spouse appearing under the photo on the descendants chart and neither do I want the wording of the "Marriage" section to be called marriage in the individual summary report or the word spouse to appear against the father even though it does report their status as "Never married".

This is an image showing the section from the individual summary report

Is there any way I can modify this?

I am using version 6.2.7 of Historian on a windows 8.1 laptop.

Yes Peter,

See FHUG Knowledge Base advice Synchronising Family Historian between 2 PCs:

That covers Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive.
