I would make the following points:

·         It’s so good, they don’t need to discount it to sell it.

·         It’s good value at the price it is.

·         It seems to sell at around the price that other quality software vendors discount down to! Draw your own conclusions from this about other software vendors!

Curious if fh is ever discounted as is often the case with other family tree software? Heredis 2022 was US$20 for Black Friday (I upgraded for $10). RootsMagic often has a seasonal sale around this time although there is not one currently, probably because of the RM8 release. I think last year one could get RM7 along with a couple of other products and the promise of a registration key for RM8 when it came out for $30, 25% off the current list price for RM8 alone.

Maybe CP does not because they want only the more serious and committed customers. A heavy discount might attract a group requiring a higher per capita load on support.

Just wondering because my trial period is running out and I've not been able to give it the workout I would like so I will be buying it (but I always like a sale!).

This topic is not about the fh software; rather it is a tip on using the features of this Groups.io group to some advantage.

It's added as a classic HTML tag in the Source Code view in the message editor:

You can get the URL of an online image typically by right-clicking on it and selecting "Copy image link". You can look up HTML tags to find information on how to control the size of the image.

Linking to external images takes up no Files or Photos storage space.

It's too bad that Groups.io does not support an Insert image by URL control; it does support copying and pasting an image with tags from a web page but that triggers moderation . For some topics, Insert image by URL would be a very efficient process in terms of the poster's time, the moderator's time and the impact on the group's storage quota. For screenshots, obviously not so convenient for the poster because they would have to upload to a publicly visible host first.

My first post using an externally linked image was moderated and not approved. On further discussion, a Moderator asked me to include the following:
  1. Please don't include images of competitive products -- this is, after all, Calico Pie's own mailing list.
  2. Please make it clear that anyone posting links to images is aware that they have:
    • to have the rights to publish the image (probably not an issue with screenshots of their own FH problems, but very likely a problem if they post images of a source, for example))
    • to host the image somewhere public (as you've mentioned) that has the capacity to handle 1000's of accesses in a short period of time
    • not to link to images on somebody else's site without permission (bandwidth theft).
I would say that these are guidelines or terms that apply to all images, regardless of the mechanism by which the contributor posts them. In which case, the group description should be expanded to include them.

Moreover, retaining moderation over attachments implies that the Owner/Moderators are taking responsibility to assure those terms have been met. Perhaps another reason to lift the restriction.

Tom,
I agree.  A 30-day test drive is not really long enough to give FH the rigorous testing it deserves.  Nevertheless, after 30 days (while working through the Getting the Most From FH6) trial and several emails to CP that got quick responses and issue resolutions, I decided to switch from RM.  I’m now working in RM to clean up the db before my transition.

I think that you may be right about the level of support required for a cheaper program.  The questions on the current RootsMagic Community forum are of a much simpler subject that the questioners should have been able to figure out if they had put a little effort into researching the question.  I enjoy the level of questions and responses on both the FHUG and the IO forums.

As for discounts, after beta testing the direct-RM-import and making several suggestions that were implemented, I emailed CP and asked if they offered discounts to beta testers.  They replied that they didn’t.  No problem, I don’t mind paying the price for good software that not only works but has good support.

And as for the annual upgrade game that some companies play, that was never the case with RM - more like decennial upgrade.

CP offer a variety of discounts.

Users upgrading from an existing version to a later major version are often offered a discount off the full list price.

When a new major upgrade is due soon, then a purchase of the current version comes with a free upgrade to the new version.

There are institutional multi-user licence discounts.

I have used it since it first came out unlike others they do not do a yearly full upgrade. They do a small upgrade from time to time for free. I much prefer that than pay an annual upgrade fee

I’ve been using FH since v3.0 and never seen a discount.  I suspect that if a discount was offered some of the fantastic support might disappear and along with the free minor upgrades.  I still think it’s the best value family history program available.

I could not run my large Halstead one-name study in FH with using this feature

With over 35,000 people in the database and over 800 “pools” is invaluable

Lots will say “oh I have no oddments” only to find that they do
One quick tip when teaching FH (back in the days of face to face meetings) was to get people to run the query, Hold down the ALT key and click the right mouse button (sorts into reverse order)

 

If it says 1 again you are doing better than most!

 

But just don’t go deleting the oddments check fist

I have quite an extensive tree logged to date.

 

Part of my early investigations were around trying to trace an unmarried mother's partner, and I suspect that I followed a couple of trails which proved to be incorrect.   As a result, I suspect that I have a number of individuals listed but where there is no valid link to my true tree.

 

 

Is there any way that I can identify any such individuals where there is no real link into my tree, such that I can just clean them out of my data.

 

 

Appreciate any assistance here.    Using V5.

This mailing list is provided by Calico Pie, the developers of Family Historian.  But FHUG (fhug.org.uk)  is a user group, run by and for users.   The two are independent of each other and it is entirely Calico Pie's choice to operate the mailing list.

Because many of the people who answer questions belong to both groups they find it easier to refer people to FHUG.  It contains an extensive Knowledge Base as well as the forums, so it is quicker to point someone to information there instead of repeating it here.  Also, has been said, any discussion involving images is much faster in the user group because there is no delay waiting for moderation.

Because some people find this group/portal/social media first. The same applies to the Family Historian group on Facebook. Not much of a problem in my opinion. Better that people find some support rather than none.

It is only suggested when images need to be shown to demonstrate a problem. Images in this group are moderated and can take some time to appear. That isn't so on FHUG

The majority of issues discussed on this platform are text only though.

Yes, all that gets saved to the CSV spreadsheet is the data and not the formatting.

So fonts and columns widths and row height are all dependent on the Excel settings.

 

It looks like your data has only five columns.

However, in the spreadsheet screenshot, only four columns are visible.

So the fifth column must be way off to the right and all the columns are clearly much wider.

Therefore Excel cannot fit so much on one A4 page and spreads it over multiple pages.

The number of rows in the spreadsheet is the same as the FH Result Set but the spacing looks larger.

If you reduce the column widths, font size, and row spacing to match the FH Result Set then the number of pages will go down.

In Excel, you can also scale the output and get the same number of pages as with FH.

Page numbering will need further customisation in Excel.

As I said, only the data is saved to CSV and everything else depends on Excel settings, which must be adjusted to match FH to get the same printout.

I have to say I noticed from the screenshots, there were more lines of information on the non Excel version, so probably the Font in Excel is larger and thus the row heights larger to compensate.

This will all compound to make many more pages than the non Excel version

Thanks for the info as I only signed up earlier.

I have been searching in desperation  as the last Widows 10 has lost a dll file so Family Historian has failed to load.  I have limited computer knowledge and approaching 80 !
