Modifying folder location for Media?
Terry Fitzgerald
I hope this question makes sense. I am a new user of Family Historian 7, coming from Family Tree Maker. I've managed to get my project created. The file folder location for my media is pointing back to the FTM media location. I've moved a COPY of the media in to the Family Historian location. I also use Parallels for FH because I am a Mac user.

Re: Would like to hear about transition experiences from RM9 to FH7
Gary
That's the first thing I did, but I don't expect much help.
The product is designed for Windows and not for running on Crossover. That raises an interesting point that I'll have to consider, if I were to buy the program. There would be little if any real tech "support". |

GEDCOM 7.0
Debbie Kennett
I just came across this very interesting overview of the history of the GEDCOM standard and the development of GEDCOM 7.0:

It was one of the presentations at the Family History Workshop organised by Brigham Young University. The full programme is here:

There is an interesting archive of slides from past conferences on the main website:

Mike;
I tried the installation instructions for FH7/Crossover. They are so outdated that the end-result was that I had to blow away the FH7 installation and re-install. That cause my trial license to no longer work. Guess that puts paid to my trying out FH7. Bit of a shame. I was really hoping it was a viable alternative to RootsMagic 8. Gary |

Thanks, Mike.
Now that I know what Novalink7 actually does, I'll check into whether the issues can be circumvented. Regards; Gary |

Re: Would like to hear about transition experiences from RM9 to FH7
Gary, Please check the FHUG Knowledge Base as I advised, especially for Crossover if that is your preferred emulator. https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/running-family-historian-on-crossover/ But also consider https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/running-family-historian-on-playonlinux-mac/
Novalink7.exe is the FH PDF Printer which is unsupported. Use the free PDFWriter for Mac instead.
Yes, Webview2 is the embedded Edge browser for the FH Web Search window and is Windows 10/11 compatible. What version of Windows are you setting for the Crossover bottle?
As I said before, you will be better able to discuss with more experienced FH on Mac users in the FHUG forums

Re: Associated Person, Alias Person
Thanks Mike, I have to confess to not having studied the possibilities here. I will read your forum post later but from this post it would appear ASSOciation will remain distinct and is not currently catered for in FH. Thanks again for your expert opinion. Re: Associated Person, Alias Person
Jackson, I suggest you need to become more familiar with the GEDCOM 7.0 and 5.5.1 specifications. Although ASSO is a valid tag in GEDCOM 5.5.1 (and earlier) it is only allowed at the Individual record level to link two Individuals. In GEDCOM 7.0 it is now also allowed at the Fact level similar to the de facto _SHAR shared Witness. However, the ASSO subsidiary ROLE tag is more formally defined than the _SHAR subsidiary ROLE tag. So it is not as simple as just substituting _SHAR with ASSO. See my posting in the FHUG Importing and Exporting Forum on FH import/export GEDCOM 7 issues: https://www.fhug.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=21665

Mike,
I tried installing FH7 under Crossover, using the current versions of each. The FH7 installation had a failure in trying to install Novalink7.exe, though I'm not sure what that is or how to fix it. Also Webview2 fails to install. I think it is an Edge browser that is now outdated. Wonder if there's something I can do. Other than that, It seems to function normally and the plugins even work. Mind you; report scrolling is slow. I also didn't have to play with my antivirus software, BitDefender. It had no fans positives. |

Re: Associated Person, Alias Person
Paul, Thank you, I guessed that but have not tested it. There is a lot of buzz around the Rootsmagic 9 release and the company describing a new feature of Associations. As I understand it these Associations are essentially Witness events under a different name? The defacto tag of _SHAR was widely accepted by many genealogy applications but now the ASSO is accepted GEDCOM and I think was so in 5.5.1. I'm interested to see if future GEDCOM 7 exports will essentially convert the _SHAR tag to ASSO or will the defacto _SHAR tag continue to co exist. Time will tell. Vyger, FH has not yet integrated the Gedcom 7 standard. As far as I am aware, they have NOT included the new structures, Tags, etc that will become available with a true gedcom7 file. Start a new project in v7.19 and then check the 2 VERS tag which still indicates Gedcom version 5.5.1.
see also https://gedcom.io/migrate/ They may have catered for exporting to a Gedcom 7 file, and reading from one, with conversions to and from the V5.5.1 specs and warnings about what may get lost. However, they now do allow to import and export using the new GEDZIP formats, which in reality are your regular or host gedcom 5.5.n files, and all associated media files into a generic gdz Zip file. It saves you doing this manually. My standard gedcom is 80,976 KB, Media folders 1.87GB in size and the gedcom7 gdz results in a 1,762,427 KB file. I think regular ftp programs may timeout with a file that big! |

I used it from January 2020 for a couple of years - the last version I had was 21-1-0. I’m sure they’ll have fixed the freezing issue by now - the main reason I went over to Parallels was because I had a few programs that ran only on Windows (such as Custodian)but didn’t play nicely with Crossover. I must admit that I’ve had no problems running RM9 on my iMac under Ventura. Nicola

Re: Would like to hear about transition experiences from RM9 to FH7
As an alternative virtual machine consider VirtualBox which is free. However, you must also pay for a Windows 10 or 11 licence whichever virtual machine you use. That is why emulators such as Crossover and PlayOnMac are popular as no Windows licence is needed but some features may not work smoothly.

Nicola;
Thanks for sharing your experiences. What version of Crossover were you using or when did you try it? I will take a look at their trial version to see how it behaves. The recurring cost of Parallels is something I'd like to avoid. I used to have it, but dropped it when they went to a subscription model. Gary |

Re: Would like to hear about transition experiences from RM9 to FH7

Mike;
Thank you. I'll check out the articles. Subscriptions to things like Parallels are something I avoid, as the yearly charges can be expensive. Buying Crossover is expensive, but I'd use it if it works. If WINE or PlayOnMac works, that would be really nice, as FH7 is a fairly expensive package on its own. Gary |

Re: Would like to hear about transition experiences from RM9 to FH7
Gary, May I suggest that you join the free FHUG at https://www.fhug.org.uk/ There are many users there who have migrated from RootsMagic 7, 8 & 9 to FH. Also, several users run FH on Mac using WINE, Crossover, and PlayOnMac. There is a free 30-day trial available for FH. See these FHUG Knowledge Base articles that may answer some of your questions: https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/importing-to-family-historian/ with a section dedicated to RootsMagic including Source Templates. https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/family-historian-on-mac-or-linux/ with advice on each emulator most of which are free.

I used FH7 on Crossover but found the program froze quite regularly, although that may now have been fixed by updates to Crossover - I ‘crossed over’ to Parallels and have had no issues at all there. Crossover has a free period initially so you can try it out.

Would like to hear about transition experiences from RM9 to FH7
Gary
I am currently running RM9 on a Mac M1 Mini and employ custom templates.
My recent experiences have proven that RM9 is poorly tested, not really a "native" Mac program and there is actually no real support. I understand from the Crossover folks that FH7 runs very well on a Mac using Crossover. I have a few questions that I hope someone can answer;

Ancestry subscriptions really aren't on-topic for this list, so the discussion would be better taken elsewhere.
